OK...it appears that I'm gonna get some flack for this but I am seriously thinking of buying one.
I even have SWAMBOs royal ascent to do so. I've said it before and I will say it again. I want a big dual purpose bike with 2 proper seats and 3 tuning forks on the tank. It may be a gamble (due the lack of history) but it is one I am seriously considering taking. I love my Z (that I also bought without a history when they first came out) and I hate my GSA. Nothing actually wrong with the GSA, I'ts just that I do not trust it....and the funny indicators that BMW have now started changing....and the horrible cost of parts.....and the "break the bike in two" thing to change the clutch....and that BMW riders do not wave to me when I'm on my Tenere - Why is that ??? - I wave to everyone regardless of what I am riding. The 660Z is just not big enough (or comfortable enough) for 2 up long distance and there are a lot of people on here comparing the 660Z with the 1200Z....why....they are clearly not in the same use/market bracket. Furthermore, what is wrong with making a bike to compete with one of the best sellers in the world. I just cannot understand why people have a problem with this. Maybe I'm just too old... BTW....Capt Moto....can I stay here if I get one as the Z and the GSA are going to have to go ???? |
In Yamaha's defence, bike prices have been fairly stagnant for the last four or five years and they are the 1st of the Japanese factories to bring their prices in line with the types of rises we have seen in the car industry for years.
It's only a matter of time till the other Japanese factories follow suit. KTM hiked their prices last year and, I believe, did so again this year. I'm actually warming to the look of the bike but the weight does put me off a bit (having the 660 drop on my foot 206kg was heavy enough). However, as Jenny stated, you can have a Multistrada for less or nearly the same money if you go for the S with the electronically adjustable suspension, panniers, and heated grips. Al. |

The Tenere is definately not a 2 person bike and I understand your thoughts exactly. I only ever ride solo so its perfect for me. For Touring and long rides etc the new Tenere is going to be a awesome bike and the engine superb. I was expecting a big version of 660 but we didnt get it and in reality I wouldnt be taking the 1200 off road anyway. I buy a bike I want and enjoy which is what its all about isnt it? If you like it go for it (in blue of course) |

Like you say its for enjoyment and its strokes for folks. I am a bit confused about the nay sayers making direct comparisond to the little 660Z. As for the blue, I want a white one but that is not going to happen and the silver just looks drab. Blue it is then. Just got to get rid of the GSA. |
I don't think it's a silly idea at all Ray - it sounds like exactly the sort of bike you've been looking for!
As you say, a 'bigger' version of the 660Z was never going to be enough of an 'improvement' over the small Tenere (which is more dirt focussed) - whereas this 1200cc bike competes directly in the 'other' Adventure market segment - right where all the other manufacturers have invested... I'm sure it will be an excellent alternative to the GS and the other Uber-trailies... I think some people were hoping for a KTM 990 competitor, but to be honest, that bike is so specialist noone else is going to bother building something similar... so if that's the sort of bike they want, why don't they just buy the KTM?! I think you've made the right choice for your intended use... I just worry you won't have a lot of change left over once you've sold the other two... J xx |

People admire the KTM 990, like the hardcore image etc but clearly in most cases then go off and buy a GS. BMW sell 3 or 4 times as many GSs at KTM sell 990adv. Yamaha wanted to produce a large adventure bike and correctly target the market leader. The only issue I have with it is the price

Capt may even give you a 1200 section

Buying the BMW was a big mistake. I just do not like it. If I had only waited 6 months - wally. I have no complaints with it (indicators excepted) but it just does not have the tuning forks on the tank. I have a big soft spot in my heart for Yamahas right from my 1972 FS1E moped onwards. |
Horses for courses. What ever rocks your boat, spins your propeller, etc etc.
and I agree, comparing a 660 with a 1200 is not really realistic. 261kg. For that reason I'm out. That's not to say at all that its wrong to want one...not at all, at all. Have a test ride, buy one if its what you want - and gis the feedback - I would be really interested for one |
