Well .... first let me say that I'll be keeping my 660 ten as long as possible, but .... I'd like one of these too. I like it. Mind, I have a V Strom 1000 and have prayed to all the bike gods for years for an upgrade. Suzuki ... sneaky ******s .... have done it and re-badged it 'yamaha'!
I take all the points raised, especially where they pertain to heritage, tradition, pedigree, off-roading, etc. It's like any bike though, you pays-your-money-and-takes-your-choice. I have no doubt that it will sell. It's badged 'Tenere' (tick), it's like a GS1200 ((tick), it's capable of longer, more comfortable, road trips (tick), it's new (tick), it's appeal will be wider than hard-core, adventure, off roaders (tick).
Think what I'm saying is that we each look at our biking needs (albeit with a loud voice from the heart interrupting from time-to-time) and buy accordingly. I like to use my little Dr250/EXC250 for serious (for me anyway) off-roading, when the trail;s are tight and tough. I like to use my V Strom if I'm on a long road haul and when I want to surprise a few of the 'fast lads'. I like using the 660 Ten for when I'm doing a ,mixture of road/trail miles. Yes, I'm fortunate to have that choice. If I could only have one bike and my needs were wide - say commuting, touring, trailing - then something like the 660 ten is the very obvious choice.
After all the hype (which I personally rather enjoyed, as it got us all talking and opinionating at least) I found the Yamaha marketing and promotion really good. Like JMo, I thought the 360 degree feature especially interesting - would love to see it without the panniers though and look forward to seeing it in the flesh. It's interesting to see how they're pitching it .....
.... off-roading gets 'time for a little rear-whell steering in the dirt' ... yeah, right!!! whilst roads gets 'attack velocity in the twistys' !!! I guess as I've spent most of my years (probably self-deludingly!) in attack velocity, I'm getting quite excited by it !! If it's half as good as my V Strom in that way, it'll be worth a ride. So you can be both a Dakar and Moto GP god !!! Putting pictures in peoples heads is what sells bikes. they are a business, after all.
