Have fitted them to the bike and put the bike back together after two weeks of having the back end missing. Have fille a couple of the stuffa bags up with junk to pad them out then fixed them to the rails. Odd size bags on the back as one is still in the packet. Also a large 90LTR bag to go across the back seat to hold sleeping bag and tent. Should have enough room now for all my camping needs.... bring it on!!!!!
Have lent the bike over with rails fitted and to be fair they touch down just before the footpegs. (which is more than enough i think as i dont ride like a hooligan when the bike is loaded up. Just like a prat down the green lanes ..) Will give them ago as they are and see. Might look different when full weight of luggage is on there.

Charcoal has got pride of place mate, so we should be toasty warm......
Let me know what you think?

They don't sit as low as I thought/it appeared from the pics. I reckon you may be ok.

Looking good big fella, now we need to see how they all check out properly loaded and on a small expedition! I will get back to you as regards a suitable meet up place and I will get you one of those small charcoal burners. At least you have a base from which to add or subtract gear etc.
I'll get in touch with that establishment that I recently mentioned and if it's OK to use will post a meeting over the Xmas period open to all.

Cheers mate, will pm with my tel no.

.........and remember.........NO pickled eggs:pottytrain5:

Crusty well impressed with your skills, and thought I had another pointer you may look into before doing the next powder coat.

Though the "sheep rack" (Chris Scott's Adventure motorcycle handbook) has a couple of things I was curious about.

Firstly, what are you strapping to it? Literally a Gunny sack of coal, or perhaps a 44 gallon drum or two?

The foot design is a bit bizarre - Cant help feeling it will dig in excessively given the chance and it looks like it is designed to swing... that should be fun.

Looks like it is mounted too far back - you usually need to have weight centered in front of the rear wheel axle. Cant help feeling that loaded you'll struggle to get wear on that front tire...

Last pointer is to have a cross brace round the back to the Number plate for structural rigidity.

Really impressed with your ingenuity and may well have to commission you for mine - Going to sort of incorporate detachable Military Ammo boxes into the mix.
Will only need a small angle iron rail to support the weight not an entire rack designed to safely strap a sheep onto. You can glean an idea from the attached picture of abandoned project (stolen bike - pikey ******s)

Hi photographicsafaris,
your link didnt work mate, so i dont know about the "sheep rack"?? you are refering to. They are disigned to carry the plastic DRYSACKs that you buy to keep your gear dry. Although i show the missus hanging over the back of the bike.... (now there is another thread altogether.......) i dont plan on putting that much weight on them. Most stuff i had in mind of carrying on them is bulky but quite light. Tent, sleeping bag, sealed bags with my clothes in them. Heavier stuff such as beer, food, stoves and stove fuel i hope to get in the green army rucks, they look to be shower proof but not 100% waterproof, so i plan on putting stuff in there that doesnt reallt need to be kept bone dry.
I am interested in all advice and suggestions so keep the comments coming. What do you have planned for your luggage needs? I can try to sort something out if you give me an idea of what you want to get on the bike. I have one set of the simple rail spare made up and one set of the full on Crusty Nomad version that i have got to finish up and get powder coated. (I want to try these on a meet before finishing the other Nomad set just in case there is any fine tuning to be done.)
Price, i havent got a clue what to charge, let me know what they are worth to any interested parties.........

One thing I'd say is make sure everything is strapped down tight and there is nothing that can work loose and move around, including straps cords etc. My mate and his lass went flying down the A1 minus the bike when their tent wrapped itself round the back wheel.
