Pannier rails?
Hi gang,
how do the Yamaha pannier box rails fit to the bike? I have found a hole in the rear of the frame that i think the rails bolt to, but i cant see how you would tighten them up without taking the exhaust off. I am going to make some custom pannier rails for my soft luggage and want to use the same mounting point, but i cant see how i would get a bolt in from the inside then tighten it up... Any help please as i dont want to fabricate my own design only to find i cant get them bolted to the bike with ease. Crusty:drunken_smilie: |
You don't have to remove the exhaust, but you do have to dis-assemble the rear of the bike to do it!
The Yam rails fit with a nut and bolt, through the hole you see - it's a pain to do. |
Thanks for the reply mate, i sort of thought that would be the case but hoped for some easier way of bolting them on.
Will have to leave it till the weekend then as having the arse end of the bike hanging off is not good when i need the thing for work. Will post pics of custom made rails when i get them done. Only trouble is every time i think of what i need to go camping and how to get it on the bike with less/no hassle the rails get more complicated and exotic. Will end up looking like a Pikey caravan welded/bolted to the back end!!!!! Crusty |
Oi, Mark why not use the two mounting screws on the top of the rear, just at the back of the seat. That is exactly why MM use thair own bracket pickups as they didn't want to use those 'holes'. I think I may have a picture:googly[1]:
Hope this helps.:BaseballHat_LNY2EG: |
Hi Steve,
i have a GIVI topbox bracket using those holes already so i will have to have a look to see what else i could get on there. I am hoping to sort a side rail that stays on the bike all the time, then some duffle bag hangers that i can fix and take off when the need arises. (Camping ect...) I am even sorting out storage space for the must have bag of charcoal.... LOL Should be sorted soon, when are we playing again? Is the Dragon the next one? I like the look of this place........ http://grizedale-camping.co.uk/ Crusty |

Hhahahahahahahaoooooooohhhhaa Steve is a Yorkshireman. The smallest thought of paying Lakeland prices for a bit of field is enough to send him into a small frenzy, followed by a quick fit and a moan about how Yorkshiremen aren't realy tight at all.....blowup I think Peatbog went to this one earlier in the year, but there is also another half decent one near Brotherswater on Kirkstone Pass. |
TCC, I used the Yamaha holes when I made my pannier frames up a while back.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...s/DSC00276.jpg They are a bit of a pain to get to with the stock silencer in place, but it's only 3 bolts to remove it and it makes life easier. You'll have to- remove seat undo grab rail bolts from under plastic buttons (small flat screwdriver and 12mm socket) remove plastic cover from rear rack (10mm socket under the back on 2 x nylocs, 4mm allen key on the four button head bolts) This allows the rear light assembly to be moved forwards. loosen the exhaust link pipe clamp (10mm socket) Undo and remove the two bolts holding the silencer in place (12mm socket) and slide the silencer towards the back of the bike (I stand with the back of the bike in my gut and a hand either side) and then remove the silencer. You could make a very simple bar that ran straight from the top hole to the pillion pegs (actually that's a cracking idea, bagsy). Good luck. |
Heres what i have been up to today..........
Stripped the back end out of the bike and ended up with this.... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0015.jpg Thought i could make it a bit easier to fit my home made bars..... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0017.jpg Drilled two holes, (starting small, then endidng up with these 13mm ones)....... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0020.jpg Got the Dremmel out to join the holes up........ http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0021.jpg 21x3mm pipe....... Its an arse to bend but is thicker then the frame tube so should last forever. http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0022.jpg Bent to 90 degrees, then welded solid for about the last half inch...... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0024.jpg Ground flush, then washer welded on. (I might grind the washers off again, as they look out of place once pipe is fitted to bike, Let me know what you think?) http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0013.jpg Drilled out, than tapped to M10 thread.......... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0033.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0034.jpg Fitted to the bike........ http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0028.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0029.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0030.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0031.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0035.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0037.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0038.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0039.jpg I have made enough for 4 sets, one for me, one for a friend. And two for any one who is interested. They will come in two versions, a simple bar to keep you soft luggage out of the back wheel, (much like the pics,) And the Crusty Desert, Pikey traveller version For more luggage carrying capacity. This version is still being finalised so keep watching........ Cut pipes, with footpeg brackets to be drilled and welded on....... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...DSCI0040-1.jpg Bad light stopped play, so more to come tomorrow....... Crusty:mblah05: |
Pleased you liked my idea ;) Looks good.

You dont need to remove anything to fit the yamaha Pannier rails. Except the seat.
What you need is the following a cable tye that has an outside diameter the same'ish as the pannier nut hole. Then you put this throught the hole under the frame look at pictures in above post. Then you can slide the nut up the cable tye until you have it against the bike frame. Hold it with you fingers. Tight fit with my littles suasages. Slide the cable tye out and put the allen bolt into the nut, and finger tighten. Then get an open ended spanners and slide it between the exhaust and the pannel at the number plate side until you find the nut. Then you can hold the nut while you tighten the allen bolt... Then tighten the front one as it is easier to get too.bigwink.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Bigwink" smilieid="588" class="inlineimg" /> |
Hi Colros,
I am not actually fitting the pannier rails, just using the mounting point to fit my own design pannier rails to. They are made up of a 20mm threaded tube tightened up with a bolt coming through the mounting hole on the frame from the inside. Mark |
I think they also make very sturdy crash bars as well.............................................. .................................................. .............................................and we all know who needs those!:applause:
|
Cheeky ******!!!!
Thinking of mountings seed drills on the rear edge of the bars, so i can re-sow the grass as i go sliding along the green lane.... Mark |
Stop messing around on the 'puter, get 'em finished and show us the pics. Are you adding extras for breaking rocks etc????????:pjrlaugh_61OD3G:
Will you be painting them a sort of mud / green colour?:gayfight: |
Have been waiting for "Machine Mart" to open as i have killed the stone on my bench grinder..... Would anyone be interested in these? As i have bought too much tube for what i need.
|
After Steve D`s "telling off" i got off the PC and out in the garage again......
Went to Machine Mart to get a new bench grinder, then spent far too long removing the washers and dressing up the pipes...... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0011.jpg Fitted each set of tubes to the bike to get the correct measurments........ http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0005.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0006.jpg Tubes look a LOT better without the washers, so i think to effort of grinding them off was worth it....... Welded footpeg brakets to bottoms of frame rails....... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0009.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0004.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0003.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0002.jpg The Crusty production line.................... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/DSCI0010.jpg Thats the basic model sorted, going to have a look at the Pikey traveller upgrade tomorrow. Looking very good. Incidentally it looks as though you have offered up the piping to the plate at the foot rest end to tack weld into position. Did you disconnect the battery before welding? I only ask as I have heard of persons having problems with the current getting into the 'System' and frying delicate circuitry. I intend to remove the screen to weld a small plate onto the bar above the instruments in order to secure my GPS there and don't want to take the front end off to do this. I will similarly use my MIG welder.
The frames look very sturdy. I will call Simon and see if he wants a pair. |
Blinking heck Mark, you are getting serious now, you have even got tyre warms fitted to the rear tyre. Are they from Lidls :mbounce:
|
nice job, very tidy! pity yamaha did not give us easy way to fit and tighten a nut on the inside bit!
a very simple solution, cool job! |
Cheers for the comments guys. Have refitted the seat to get an idea of where my army rucksack panniers are going to sit on the bike then i will sort out the brackets for the removable "stuffa bag" holders. 2x 60LTR bags on the side of the bike and one 90LTR bag across the back seat. Should be enough room for all my weekend beer and a jar of pickled eggs........ (dont get me started about pickled bloody eggs.....) Ask Steve D what they did to me in Wales with pickled eggs:Suspicious_DXD5FP:

PS Don't forget about the charcoal!:laughing1: |
Dont worry Steve,
pride of place on the Crusty Desert Nomad version of the pannier rails has been given to charcoal storage!!!! Have even bought a burner similar to yours so we can keep REALLY toasty at the Dragon next year mate.... How do you rate your tent? As they have them for 39 at Go Outdoors, but i thought i would check with you as to how easy they are to put up and how much room you get in them? Mark |

The tent is a bit more fiddly to fit up but the extra space is brilliant especially if you want to get your panniers and luggage inside if the weather is inclement. I really got mine for the summer as I wanted something less cloustrophobic but I will use it during the winter now as It's much easier to get into and the front / side opening combo is a real bonus. As regards the pickled eggs, the idea when totally sober doesn't really get me exited, but with a bucket full of beer in the old belly, when Simon brings out that Huge jar of pickled eggs it's a real mouthwatering treat until............................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .the next morning!:hcrap::surrender:blowup:smilies0979: |
Has been feckin cold this weekend so i have had the gas heater on in the garage to stop me freezing to death while i finished one set of Desert nomad panniers.......
Welded an extra loop onto the simple pannier rail to carry the "stuffa bag" brackets... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...ty/gjfgfgj.jpg You will notice 3 small pieces of 10mm tube welded onto the pannier hanger, these are locating points the hanger brackets so they can be removed when not in use.... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...usty/ujukr.jpg Mounting hooks welded onto the panniers backets, they locate in the tubes shown above....... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...sty/jryjjr.jpg Pannier bracket shown off the bike........... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4.../sdfsgsgws.jpg Shown fitted to the bike........ http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...ty/jfgfghg.jpg Both sides fitted to the bike........... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...ty/sdgsdfg.jpg My wife is standing on one of the brackets, should be strong enough for Steve D`s charcoal bags then????....... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...ty/fxdfgdf.jpg Inside picture of mounting setup, a tap with a mallet knocks them in and out when needed....... Different pics to give you the general idea of what they look like, going the see how much powder coating is on the way home from work tomorrow....... http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...sty/dffdhf.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...y/dfhdfhdf.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...usty/fcvdh.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...ncrusty/ff.jpg http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...ty/fjnfjfg.jpg Thats about it for now....... job's a good'n!

Cheers for the reply Captain. Just getting the feeling back in my toes!!! I do have some of these for sale but dont know what the rules are for selling on the forum. Not going into business with them, but can do limited amounts if there is interest.

Blimey, I hope that little lot won't be too back heavy! Mind you the charcoal is not that heavy. Don't forget that I used my pillion rest to support the charcoal bags and then just bungeed them to the frame. Didn't budge a bit. Will be good to see a dummy 'load up'! Look pretty strong though when most of the Xt crowd are going for 'weight' off. Irrespective you will have loads of carrying capacity. Cannot wait for more updates. If we can get rid of some of this snow perhaps a dummy run before the Dragon. I know of a very nice little pub in Wetton (North of Ashbourne) with camping behind, will check it out.

Hi Steve,
it doesnt weigh much really mate as it is tube and not solid bar. I did perhaps go a bit O.T.T. with the tube i bought and could have got one with a thinner wall. But that is all they had at my local Steel stock holder. I think the they should be ok as the stuffa bags they are designed to carry are more bulk than weight. I want a couple of those plastic tool tubes that i have seen on here, to fix to the inside of the rails if anyone knows of where to get them over here? As i have only seen them from tractor retailers in the States!! I am up for a camping trip whenever you are ready mate, have got nearly all my stuff sorted now, just got to sort out how to get it all on the bike with the most ease, Have bought a new tent, army sleeping bag system, 2 stoves (got rid of the crap coleman thing that let me down in Wales.) Pocho, tarp, camp bed to get me off the floor, water carrier, new pots and pans, thermals, Hein Gerricke Tuareg trousers, (still looking for a jacket as they have stopped selling them new and i need a XXXL) You will have to let me have your mobile number Via PM so we can sort something out with the camping. Speak soon mate have have a great Christmas and New Year...... Crusty |
That sounds great. I am trying to get in touch with Nick who has those really nice Tool Tubes like the one that I have, I know he has a box full. I will contact a few places half way between us and see waht I can come up with. I am not so sure about a camp bed as it will eventually destroy the ground sheet in the tent. Did you get one the same as mine?
We need pics of a dummy load! ..............and leave room for the pickled eggs:pjrlaugh_61OD3G: |
Hi Steve,
have dropped of the rails at the powder coaters and have to ring tomorrow to see if they can get them done before they shut for Xmas. If not i wont get them back till the New Year!!! :( I have bought a Kyham sherpa tent as this has a bit on the end for cooking/sitting round the Bar-B. I have got one of the canvas camp beds that you have to fight like a ***** to get the legs to fit, (should keep me fit...) and was going to use a mat under the legs to save the groundsheet. Tim with the beemer who was at Wales the other week was using the same setup and as i already had the bed i thought i would give it a go. If not i will get a roll mat. Let me know if you get anything sorted mate, i will be there, pannier rails or not!! (will be a big pile of stuffa bags bungeed to the back of the bike........) Mark |

Alright TCC, how low do they sit? Will there be any problems in bends? The camera angle makes it look like they come down by the spindle.
|
Was thinking that meself, won't take much to ground them out, I know of one wild spirit on here that has decked his panniers. Though is difficult to tell from the photos.
|
Have got them back from the powder coaters and they look good, even if i do say so myself. As to height off the ground, they are further away from the floor than there is travel in the rear wheel before it hits the bottom of the mudguard. As to cornering i must admit i had forgetten about the lean angle of the bike. I will fit them on and get the back of the bike fitted back up then take some more pictures. If they look like they are still to low i can grind the hooks off then weld some more on lower down , which will bring the ride height up. Just have to get them power coated AGAIN.... Doh!!!
Well spotted guys, Any other sugestions for fine tuning? Crusty |
