Flickering Neutral Light and now nuffink!

Went to fire up the Z this morning after it being outside and undercover since October and found that nothing happened when it hit the start button.

I'd kept the battery in the house on trickle-charge, so knew that was good.

I found that the bike had been left in gear, so selected neutral and noticed that the N light was not working. Tried starting the bike and nothing, so this time swiped up the side-stand and she started straight away. I noticed the ECU light was on for about 1 second but this went out. The moment I put down the side-stand again the engine cut out.

Here's the question.... Is it a faulty neutral light switch or a side-stand switch or both that is causing the issue? Once the bikes running, even if I hold the clutch in and kick down the stand, the bike cuts out?

Cheers

Almost certainly sounds like dicky (or stuck) neutral light switch. The clutch and side stand switches should like they are doing what they should.

It's probably just got stuck in the one position because it was left in gear and spent a long time in one place.

Remove the switch and clean, or... leave it; it may well free itself off if you get the gearbox warm, ride it for a while and go in and out of neutral a few times?

Thanks for this, I did wonder whether it might just be sticking. Took the bike out for about an hour this morning but was mainly riding, so not much neutral time.

The N light was flickering a lot during the later part of 2014, so I think I'll order a new one to be on the safe side. I am off to France with it later this year, so would rather prevent a breakdown than fix one!

Thanks for help.

After meeting some of the XT crowd at the H Diner this lunchtime, a stop/start queue back through Abingdon did the trick and it's working again, albeit it is flickering, so still time for a change me thinks.

I thought a bit of dancing through the gearbox might free it, but it does sound like it's got a weak spring anyway, which is probably why it got stuck in the first place. So it probably is the right time to replace it. I think they are less than 20 for the genuine item?
