It's probably just got stuck in the one position because it was left in gear and spent a long time in one place.
Remove the switch and clean, or... leave it; it may well free itself off if you get the gearbox warm, ride it for a while and go in and out of neutral a few times?

Thanks for this, I did wonder whether it might just be sticking. Took the bike out for about an hour this morning but was mainly riding, so not much neutral time.
The N light was flickering a lot during the later part of 2014, so I think I'll order a new one to be on the safe side. I am off to France with it later this year, so would rather prevent a breakdown than fix one!
