Ive done my first oil change on my Ten as per the Haynes manual.

I filled up the first lot of oil that is specified, started her, blip throttle and so on. added the other 0.7l of oil. but i have a problem.

When i use the dipstick to check the oil, there seems to be virtually nothing in there???? the dipstick has about one mil of oil on the end, this isnt even enough to reach the empty line on the dipstick.

Before i go sticking more in i was wondering if im just checking it wrong?

Does the amount required according to the haynes manual tie up with that in the Ten user manual? - I don't know. How did you measure the amount you put in - accurately? The reason I ask is I have a measuring cylinder and its an accurate way rather than a kind of guess. Another reason I ask is that it doesn't take that much oil to take it from low to Hi on the stick so you only need to be a bit out with your quantity.
Anyway as long as you have run the engine as described by the book, remeasured and are still low, no harm in topping up.

i read the oil change thread on this site and the amounts listed there match my Haynes manul. I measured it using a measuring jug.

So is it best to check the oil with the bike upright, 5 mins after its been run for a little while?

Aye.

I then tend to check the level after a ride (not every!) - ie get off, take gear off, put kettle on, have a fag then time to check level.

+1. Put in 2.6 litres including filter (in two stages), park the bike, relax and check it if you're worried after finishing a ride. It is most unlikely that the oil will be at its correct level after a few revs in the shed. Don't keep adding oil trying to get it right without riding imo, or you might end up blowing seals.

Once I've filled with 2.6L, I don't worry about looking at it for 600-800km or so. After all, it's only a day's good ride. Or a few days' shorter rides. I figure even if the bike burns excessive oil, it won't run dry in that time. Once it gets a few serious km under its belt I wont be so casual, but for now - meh, it's all good.

+1 As the comments above. Don't worry about it; if the oil level after refilling is just touching the bottom of the dipstick you'll have enough and it'll be fine to ride around with for a short while. Check the level again after you've done a bit of "normal" riding and things have settled.
