I'm thinking about of one of these

Although I prefer the x but will probably need to settle for an r (just prefer the sm style) plus all the x's are miles from me and over my budget. But then if (IF) I went for an r and converted it, it'd cost as much or more than looking an r in the first place. Truth be told most/all the riding will be on the rds, was also looking at tdm's but another debate.

The only think putting me off r's is the 21 front wheel and crap looking "thin" swingers compared to a thicker one on x's and later models. I guess engines and the rest and the same

Decisions..

That's nice..

I really don't know what try and get, like I say I do like the xt's but prefer the x to the r and trying to find x front ends to convert are hellish. Was also looking tigers but think the weigh and nibbleness of xt's might win

Thanks for the link.......I don't want a 400 though the lowest is 650.....don't like that Ktm at all can't afford it anyway . The last thumpers I had were xr650r sm (kick only) and rc30 (ccm). I still don't know why I sold that bloody 650r

Something about it don't like....and something I do

I think I'll stick to the xt's or maybe the tdm....unless something unexpected turns up

I haven't ridden an s but it was a serious option for me at the time.
the R has a higher ground clearance and check how hard the suspension is on the S. Also check the ride height, I think the s saddle is slightly taller

even for road use I find the compliant suspension of the R excellent for dealing with potholes and bad road repairs and rumble strips!
the 21" front is cumbersome but is more useful for climbing kerbs and obstacles

this is what I cinsidered when looking at XT the rest is really your preference and use

Height's not a problem but getting used to a 21" front might be....the bike/s like I had were an rc30 and xr650r both were sm's. Thing is, there's no in shops local and don't want to go to private and ask for a go as they're usually VERY reluctant unless the cash is in their hands....and you'd feel obliged to buy after it

Hi Michael, I don't think you would have an problems adapting to the 21 inch wheel. . I have gone from an XR650R in Supermoto form to my Tenere . The Tenere is a brilliant all rounder and with the right tyres on handles really well. Steve

what you find is XT is very light in its class (excluding ktm). despite low power output, it is very a agile.

you can cruise at 60~80 mph (depending how windy it is!) and easily get passed 100 (again depending on the wind and your bike control)

I think the S is probable a better fit for you if you do not need the green laning and tackling any inferior tarmac surface thrown at you.

I have not ridden the S but given the wheel & tyre sizes, it would be more suitable to urban riding with a good road holding.

the R is more of an acquired taste in comparison

aprilia pegasus trail is an excellent bike based on XT but with more kit & creature comfort but they are very rare
