Welcome to XT660.

Speedo healers have been well covered on the forum. If you put "speedo healer", with the quotation marks into the search function, you will see many posts.

This here covers it off in detail though

Speedo Rant

Its an absolute disgrace that Yamaha have deliberately adjusted the speedo on the bike to read 10% over, in this day and age. My '87 tenere was more accurate.

Its Disgusting that a 9 cycle computer is more accurate than the one Yammy came up with. Dont know what they were thinking, but it is misleading and Unsafe - in a 30 zone, I am riding at 27mph causing traffic disruption (honest guv)

I know that its a small issue - but it is truly a shambles that they should sort out.

Thankfully Yamaha made it 10% out - makes the maths easy!

Until you change sprocket sizes!! Keeps me on my toes working out the 11-12% over read that I get.

Why? It's a common factor throughout the automotive industry. It stops manufacturers being taken to court by every nummnutts who gets a ticket for speeding. If you are captured at 33mph outside a school it means your speedo is reading closer to 37mph and you deserve a ticket.

Alternatively, stick to the limits and you are riding responsibly (in terms of appropriate use of speed) and can pay more attention to the hazards, rather than wondering if you are over the limit.

3mph difference in <town> traffic makes no difference whatsoever, and travelling at 27 rather than 30 will make a difference to that child you hit. Speed limits are LIMITS, not targets.

I always thought that these signs are only well-meant recommendations ...

But you are right - in the cities you have to be carefull because of childs and other pedestrians.

I've thought about a speedo healer. And was going to get one.

But Kev said that if you heal the speedo, you give the odo reading (which is pretty accurate) a hernia. So, I gave that some extra thinks, and in the interest of knowing where I am re fuel consumption and distance-to-sustenance, I reckon I'll continue with the 10% calculation/correction routine.

Annoying, but simple enough. Interestingly, my small car (a humble Focus ST/XR5, built in Germany) suffers a measly 4% error. Don't know why Yamaha had to be so drastic. Possibly, as as been said, to stop sue-crazy tools from blaming other people for their f&&k-ups.

Slightly off topic, but regarding speed limits.
I failed my first bike test for three things.
I didn't use my brake before turning left - I used engine breaking, I was indicating.
There was one occasion I didn't use enough fingers on the brake lever - Ok, it's in the rules, I accept this.
But the final mark was for not doing the speed limit. - I got up to about 65mph, there was a car overtaking a lorry in front (dual carraigeway), so I played 'safe' and didn't overtake waiting for a clear spot, but we turned off before that happened. FAIL.

I passed my second test (following guidance from my instructor)- Pulled away very bloody quick each time getting straight up to 2MPH over the limit, 31/32 in a 30. 42 in a 40 and definately got it up to 70 (72) on the dual roads. Left braking a little late and braked hard using a full hand each time, (Is my brake light on now Mr Examiner? Pass? Yes. Same Examiner.

..... That guy definately saw the signs as a target, 'Making good progress' or something.

I was, althought pleased to pass, well p*ssed, I drove better and safer the first test. (I thought so anyway.)

I use a SpeedoHealer, Correcting my readings using satnav. Does this mean my milage will be out? There is mention above that this is true.?

Got 16/46 sprockets on now, seems to be correct speedo reading without healing.
