HID50.com 164 took me about 2 hours to fit, had to modify the main beam connection removing the spade connectors as in the pics, I kept spade connectors on the existing wires where possible incase of a replacement bulb needed away on a trip. Cut wires were soldered and heat shrinked over. Will test the lights out later in the week.....

Nice job, Toast.
I bought two 35W kits from HID50, but bottled out of hacking at the main beam bulb holder so at present only have HID on dip beam. Have you tried switching from dip to main (or vice versa) while actually riding yet? If so, how is the delay while the HID comes up to full brightness? I had visions of two seconds of dark/terror when switching from one to the other, so was thinking about rewiring so that dip stays on when main is lit (ie dip is on at all times). Noticed the delay too, alot could happen in that time. Be a great idea to keep dip running if the electrics would cope with both? someone may already have done this, wonder why it wasnt done from new

Isn't the higher temp. bad for your reflector?
On the bmw gs-forum there was a topic about reflectors getting dull because of the heat.

Time will tell I suppose....I am led to believe they are more efficient than halogens with lower power consumption, lower losses (heat?) and upto four times more light. More importantly I want to be able to see through the corner on a night time trip.

Nice job toast
I've had 35w HID's fitted to the dip beam for some time and have had no problem with heat. there so bright i don't need to use main beam. if you want somewhere tidier to put the ballest's there is some flat spots under the tank by the plastic protecor's. stuck mine with velcro so are easy to move when tank comes off. |

Used Velcro to mount mine but the cables were to short to allow mounting under the tank so I mounted them to the frame/oil tank, was concerned with the possible heat exposure but the industrial Velcro seems to act as a good heat shield, rode in 34deg Celsius weather all day today and there was no more noticeable heat on the ballasts, Time will tell if it lasts but so far it looks OK. Having a ball on my Tenere! Jules |
