abs or not to abs - and disabling it
Hi,
I am close to put my order but I can hard time deciding which version to go for. With abs or without. To be honest abs version is tempting only because of lower seat. Do you think I can lower non abs version as well? Regrading abs on dirt is no use and it will be hard to switch it off and not sure ho well it works on street. Any suggestion? thanks Last edited by kc2ine; 19-06-14 at 15:17. |

There are pros and cons for ABS, depends very much on the kind of use you're going to put your bike to, and only you can answer that!
Maybe you do need to ask yourself honestly... (A) Do you want the ABS version for the ABS, or (B) Do you want the ABS version for the low seat? If the answer is (B), then don't buy an ABS bike, save your money, avoid the complexity and just get a standard bike and lower it (if you need to)! I say "if you need to" because you might actually get on perfectly well with the full fat version... a lot of the seat height thing is in the mind! If the answer is (A), then you "need" the ABS version! |

Are you going to ride a lot on the roads among other vehicles - maybe even commuting to work ?
Then I would recommend going with the ABS version. The only reason i see for buying the non-ABS version is if your riding will benefit from the longer suspension travel. My reason for buying the XT660Z was to upgrade to ABS from my trusty XTZ750 Super Tenere. In most disciplines the old one was just as good or better .... Also ask yourself if you would buy a car without ABS today ? But in car you have extra wheels to keep the rubber side down when you lock up the wheels. If you lock op the front wheel in an emergency breaking on mc you have to be extremely fast to avoid crashing. On good tarmac you can normally brake good enough without the aid of ABS but if the road is suddenly slippery from diesel, oil, corn etc it is not so easy to do it properly ...

I will be riding 50/50 on/offroad so at least switchable abs would be nice.
Anybody already figured this out how to switch the abs off in this bike? I hear that there are aftermarket ABS switch available for the Super Tenere so maybe for this one as well? Does that trick work for disabling ABS in xt660z??? would be great! Last edited by kc2ine; 19-06-14 at 15:15. |

I read on this site that that trick also works for the 660 and takes about 30 seconds. If you stop the engine, ABS will be enabled again. I think you will find this a pain in the neck and soon grow tired of it. I had a BMW which you could switch the ABS on and off with and even pressing a button every time the engine is switched off is a pain.
As much as I'd sooner have ABS on the road, if you are really doing 50:50 I personally would not go that route. I'll be doing 70:30 road to off-road with my XTZ and I already decided to forgo the ABS based on my experience with the BMW. ABS version has lower ground clearance too. |

You cannot ride offroad with abs on, it's not safe and no fun. Last edited by kc2ine; 19-06-14 at 18:43. |

Depends
Yeah, I guess it just depends how often you stop and turn the engine off while you are riding off road and whether, once you do, you will be in a position to get the rear wheel off the ground again and spinning until the abs disengages. I just know it wouldn't work for me. But if it works for you, then great; go for it.
