I think you will find rather than thinking the advice given was weird, you're own opinion and experience differs.
I am, however, very weird!!

Don't they recommend fully synth oil?

Time spent without rod in hand is time forever wasted.

Yeah, do it yourself.

Yamaha charged me 330quid when I burned mine.....heh it with 1k on the clock but purely my fault when I went some serious off road...

full synthetic...another weird advice on this forum. :(

Well, just for the record. Yamaha does not recommend any type of oil. They recommend of course Yamaha Lube. IMHO in the case of an XT the type of oil doesn't really matter. I have semi synth in it ever since. And in bikes I owned before I had mineral car engine oil in it and never ever problems with the clutch or what so ever.
And guys, just ride this bike and don't do science about it.

Bye.

But in the manual, well at least in the german once, Yamaha does not recommend mineral, semi or full. It's up to the rider.

Bartosz 24-07-14 22:20

There is more polite way of saying it, but... i will agree with our banned friend :-D And fridolin. Viscosity is important, and fact that oil is synthetic will only help in certain conditions. In other conditions will make no difference and we will only overpay for the oil not having any benefits.

Indeed, it is down to the rider. But, if you go to a dealer and get a service you will get semi-synthetic Yamalube by default. It is also what is in the motor when new. It is the officially endorsed and recommended product. You can of course ask for/use a higher spec oil if you want, and they will gladly oblige! ;)

The point being though (with reference to kc2ine's comment), is that semi-synthetic oil is absolutely fine for use in the XT.

But our banned friend didn't say what you said so correctly. He basically said it was bad advice to use anything other the fully synthetic.

DirtyTenere 25-07-14 02:56

What's the concern with using a fully synth oil?

Time spent without rod in hand is time forever wasted.

Thanks Pepsi for the walk though I will defenetly be giving it a crack if yamaha doesn't do it under warranty.
