My Tenere XT660Z mods

Hello, i am trying to show you my upgrades for a while, but just did not find time for it...
So i will start now, try to make some explanations why and what I did to my precious.

This is how my bike look like on the day I bought it this year in march, for my birthday:

http://www.shrani.si/f/19/yc/15TinIc...rejka-nova.jpg

Before this bike i had KTM 990 S Adventure, and sold it because i needed something better an agile for off road and still to make it somewhere far when on road. I think Tenere is the best compromise for that kind of riding.

First upgrade was high fender from Polisport on OTR, so the mud will not jam again and stop my front wheel in the mud:

Because i rode WP suspension on KTM, this original suspension on Tenere did not meet my standards... The bike was not able to eat what I put beneath him on rough trails when riding fast, so i bought Hyperpro springs at Calsport for 220€ for front and rear:

http://www.shrani.si/f/21/QO/2Kz6Tsf...sivnifedri.jpg
Now i can do this with no harm...
http://www.shrani.si/f/3M/3r/3BysGASn/slika-062.jpg
Now the handling and breaking is better, and there is less dive...

I then put scottoiler eSystem, because I ride a lot, and dont like to work around chain alot, after a hard day on the bike.
Scott:

Reservoir on the side:
http://www.shrani.si/f/f/lW/2fDpY5Sn/scottoiler2.jpg

Nozzle:
http://www.shrani.si/f/3C/wb/1ESvGLbo/scottoiler3.jpg

I ride a lot in woods, and branches and mud stuck on nozzle, so did not lube the chain properly. Scottoiler is ok, but not good enough for offroading.

I like to ride in all weather conditions, so heated grips are usefull. I found the best solution in Symtec heated grips, because i could keep the original rubber grips, because this system is actually a heated sticker, that is put beneath original grips. Its cheap also (20-30€) Work fine for me.

Off/Low/High button is on the dashboard

These are the heated grips:

I found that I ride a lot standing on the bike, for better control and handling, so i stand on pegs. I removed the original rubber from them, but the peg is too smal, so did not feel good on a long ride, my feet started to pain.
I widened originals to this:

Standing a lot on the bike needs good position of the rider for better control, so i bought on the OTR this handlebar risers, i rised it for 3 centimeters, which is the most you can get, without changing the cables and its tight already. So now the handlebar is higher and a bit forward than original. I have better control when standing now.
http://www.shrani.si/f/32/af/4MeFAoV...ski-krmila.jpg

Now its easyer for me to ride like this:

http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/WJ/4mBKhRAu/slika-075.jpg

For real offroading i like, the original gear ratios are not as its best for my kind of riding.
So i have put 13 sprocket in front and one bigger in the rear. Bike has now more power at low RPM, and I can ride it easier on tricky parts without damaging the clutch:
http://www.shrani.si/f/39/Gq/3mHMzoih/novizobniki.jpg

Because more mud and rock is better :P
I use Mitas C02, its cheap for 47€ here in Slovenia.
http://www.shrani.si/f/I/d6/4jv3qMVQ/gumemitasc02.jpg

For unlimited rides on the unknown territory i made 12V power socket on the inside of the dashboard and handle for Garmin
http://www.shrani.si/f/2m/2X/PYte84D...silcvelika.jpg

Well sometimes rider falls of the bike, so i bought water pump protection on the OTR, that was a good buy, because on Enduromania that part saved my water pump:
http://www.shrani.si/f/J/ZW/3q0q3l04/zascitapumpe.jpg

When riding with my "motocross friends" i get lots of stones, so its cheaper to invest in prevention, i wound this protection at Touratech, surprisingly is cheaper than on the OTR, ad looks better too, has better solution for mounting:
http://www.shrani.si/f/33/U5/HmX5bTR/zascitaluci.jpg

I bought this also at touratech, but fall apart after first time I fell on the gravel road
http://www.shrani.si/f/1X/bh/gW9FUEV...chstopalka.jpg

So then I just welded a piece of steel instead, its better and cheaper.

When traveling, you need a place for luggage. Everything you want to buy is quite expensive, so I made racks on my own, gave it a laser cut...Total cost close to zero.

With the plate:

Side racks, for my soft luggage, and the grey tube is for my tools...

That is how I was packed for my trip to Enduromania

Original exhaust is heavy and not good for power...
Luckily i live in the land of Akrapovič. My friend works there, so he help me made the single sided exhaust
Oldie:

New exhaust, finding the final position, then we will conect with the pipes.

Building the pipe link:

We used sandwich mesh, to protect the wool:

With this mod i got more power on low RPM, sounds great.
Bike weighs for 3,2 kilograms less.
Total cost of this exhaust mod was less than 60€!

I already broke 3 levers on handlebar, so time to protect them, now its getting colder also, so I bought Polisport hand protection made of plastics.
Gives some wind protection and a little "braking levers" protection.
But if you want protection for your levers i advise to buy something made out of aluminium like Barkbusters or similar. These plastic ones will bend and can also brake the lever. Like I did.

Mounted on the bike:

My last upgrade was done this weekend. Since I changed the exhaust i cannot use the home made side racks i build, because they were mounted on the original exhaust.
The originals are again expensive, so i bought one used from Yama TDM, to use it to make it fit on my bike. Later this winter I will also make the panniers...

TDM rack already cut to pieces:
http://www.shrani.si/f/3E/e5/1f0l24t9/img3400.jpg

Some cutting, and fitting, and cutting and fitting...

http://www.shrani.si/f/y/CN/21Z4uFqD/img3406.jpg

Left side rack was simple, try to maker it identical and mirrored on the other side.

Sandblasted it, painted it for like 5-6 times:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/xa/4BFw7kGf/dsc01052.jpg

Looks promising:

http://www.shrani.si/f/3H/10O/4HRFoBD7/dsc01143.jpg

I also predicted a spot for tool tube, since i have one sided exhaust, i had place on the other. Just great to put two tool tubes, where I can keep a lot of tools.

This is it for now.
My bike was little transformed during this season.
I put some character in it on my own, to make it feel just i like it.
To make it useful as i can for my riding style.
I love this bike.
Got some ideas for next modifications, to make this winter shorter.
The very next is the bash plate i mentioned in the other thread.
Hope I will make it with your help.

I hope you like what I did to mi bike so far. I wrote it here also to help some other owner of the Tenere, when needing information about this bike. I know how difficult it is sometimes to find exactly the info you need.

Does look like youve made the bike into what i would be looking at doing if a were to get one.

Im just too tall for the standard style/stock. (Although at the moment ive an R ive sat on the Z in the shops quiet alot and find not real big difference as ive a set of raiser links.)

tripletom 20-12-10 21:02

I like what you've done fella, remarkably similar to me! I think there are more people doing their own stuff with Tenere's rather than throwing money at the bike on TT products instead.
This makes me happy.

cr3sp0 20-12-10 21:37

Nice mods Ni3ous - what mount did you use for your Garmin? Looks similar to the Nuvi I've got. Cheers.

Nelis 20-12-10 21:40

Nice mods!

I can only dream about being that handy, so im buying the Touratech goodies.
:)

Pleiades 20-12-10 22:27

Nice mods - all practical too.

If your mate can knock up 50 of those exhausts in his lunch breaks at the Akrapovic factory and sneak them out in his pants, he'll make a fortune on here!

Touratech stuff isn't that bad (in fact their alloy fabrications are very good), you just need to be patient, fairly wealthy and be able to read instructions in German!

Gerhard Beukes 20-12-10 23:18

now that you have done all those mods, i think it is time to do some mods to that KTM suit of yours too....cannot ride your fully mod Ten with that orange suite on???...or can he???
