My Tenere XT660Z mods

Hello, i am trying to show you my upgrades for a while, but just did not find time for it...
So i will start now, try to make some explanations why and what I did to my precious.

This is how my bike look like on the day I bought it this year in march, for my birthday:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1M/B3/1G766kJu/tenerejka.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/19/yc/15TinIc...rejka-nova.jpg

Before this bike i had KTM 990 S Adventure, and sold it because i needed something better an agile for off road and still to make it somewhere far when on road. I think Tenere is the best compromise for that kind of riding.

First upgrade was high fender from Polisport on OTR, so the mud will not jam again and stop my front wheel in the mud:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1s/V5/1sH6Yw8...44-800x600.jpg

Because i rode WP suspension on KTM, this original suspension on Tenere did not meet my standards... The bike was not able to eat what I put beneath him on rough trails when riding fast, so i bought Hyperpro springs at Calsport for 220€ for front and rear:

http://www.shrani.si/f/21/QO/2Kz6Tsf...sivnifedri.jpg
Now i can do this with no harm...
http://www.shrani.si/f/3M/3r/3BysGASn/slika-062.jpg
Now the handling and breaking is better, and there is less dive...

I then put scottoiler eSystem, because I ride a lot, and dont like to work around chain alot, after a hard day on the bike.
Scott:
http://www.shrani.si/f/21/PS/28Q99MgL/scottoiler.jpg

Reservoir on the side:
http://www.shrani.si/f/f/lW/2fDpY5Sn/scottoiler2.jpg

Nozzle:
http://www.shrani.si/f/3C/wb/1ESvGLbo/scottoiler3.jpg

I ride a lot in woods, and branches and mud stuck on nozzle, so did not lube the chain properly. Scottoiler is ok, but not good enough for offroading.

I like to ride in all weather conditions, so heated grips are usefull. I found the best solution in Symtec heated grips, because i could keep the original rubber grips, because this system is actually a heated sticker, that is put beneath original grips. Its cheap also (20-30€) Work fine for me.

Off/Low/High button is on the dashboard
http://www.shrani.si/f/2V/H0/1lusEi1H/grelne-rocke.jpg
These are the heated grips:
http://www.shrani.si/f/r/3u/2EBXF7RC/grelnerocke2.jpg

I found that I ride a lot standing on the bike, for better control and handling, so i stand on pegs. I removed the original rubber from them, but the peg is too smal, so did not feel good on a long ride, my feet started to pain.
I widened originals to this:
http://www.shrani.si/f/2D/zX/EQTUB4x...jenetacke2.jpg

Ni3ous 20-12-10 19:43

Standing a lot on the bike needs good position of the rider for better control, so i bought on the OTR this handlebar risers, i rised it for 3 centimeters, which is the most you can get, without changing the cables and its tight already. So now the handlebar is higher and a bit forward than original. I have better control when standing now.
http://www.shrani.si/f/32/af/4MeFAoV...ski-krmila.jpg

Now its easyer for me to ride like this:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1E/fV/4FUOzQay/slika-080.jpg
http://www.shrani.si/f/1u/ia/1cbSeTn8/slika-078.jpg
http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/WJ/4mBKhRAu/slika-075.jpg

For real offroading i like, the original gear ratios are not as its best for my kind of riding.
So i have put 13 sprocket in front and one bigger in the rear. Bike has now more power at low RPM, and I can ride it easier on tricky parts without damaging the clutch:
http://www.shrani.si/f/39/Gq/3mHMzoih/novizobniki.jpg

Because more mud and rock is better :P
I use Mitas C02, its cheap for 47€ here in Slovenia.
http://www.shrani.si/f/I/d6/4jv3qMVQ/gumemitasc02.jpg

For unlimited rides on the unknown territory i made 12V power socket on the inside of the dashboard and handle for Garmin
http://www.shrani.si/f/2m/2X/PYte84D...silcvelika.jpg

Well sometimes rider falls of the bike, so i bought water pump protection on the OTR, that was a good buy, because on Enduromania that part saved my water pump:
http://www.shrani.si/f/J/ZW/3q0q3l04/zascitapumpe.jpg

When riding with my "motocross friends" i get lots of stones, so its cheaper to invest in prevention, i wound this protection at Touratech, surprisingly is cheaper than on the OTR, ad looks better too, has better solution for mounting:
http://www.shrani.si/f/33/U5/HmX5bTR/zascitaluci.jpg

I bought this also at touratech, but fall apart after first time I fell on the gravel road
http://www.shrani.si/f/1X/bh/gW9FUEV...chstopalka.jpg

So then I just welded a piece of steel instead, its better and cheaper.

When traveling, you need a place for luggage. Everything you want to buy is quite expensive, so I made racks on my own, gave it a laser cut...Total cost close to zero.
Original:

With the plate:
http://www.shrani.si/f/2h/yY/3lDG8wOB/zadajsplosco.jpg
Side racks, for my soft luggage, and the grey tube is for my tools...
http://www.shrani.si/f/7/uO/1JbhWVM2...cibreztorb.jpg

That is how I was packed for my trip to Enduromania

Ni3ous 20-12-10 19:52

Original exhaust is heavy and not good for power...
Luckily i live in the land of Akrapovič. My friend works there, so he help me made the single sided exhaust
Oldie:
http://www.shrani.si/f/34/uG/3JkH3IQ...rorinatleh.jpg
New exhaust, finding the final position, then we will conect with the pipes.

Building the pipe link:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1r/1I/189aq9x...je-lonca-2.jpg

We used sandwich mesh, to protect the wool:
http://www.shrani.si/f/3q/rr/13YXl96g/dsc01068.jpg
http://www.shrani.si/f/1E/Dw/2d7bH5Bk/dsc01070.jpg

The wool stuffing:

Final product:
http://www.shrani.si/f/2R/2Z/3pBymBQ1/lonc.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/2p/3R/9baJMeK/koncan-lonc.jpg

With this mod i got more power on low RPM, sounds great.
Bike weighs for 3,2 kilograms less.
Total cost of this exhaust mod was less than 60€!

I already broke 3 levers on handlebar, so time to protect them, now its getting colder also, so I bought Polisport hand protection made of plastics.
Gives some wind protection and a little "braking levers" protection.
But if you want protection for your levers i advise to buy something made out of aluminium like Barkbusters or similar. These plastic ones will bend and can also brake the lever. Like I did.

Mounted on the bike:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1l/FW/1meTg9E...knamotorju.jpg

My last upgrade was done this weekend. Since I changed the exhaust i cannot use the home made side racks i build, because they were mounted on the original exhaust.
The originals are again expensive, so i bought one used from Yama TDM, to use it to make it fit on my bike. Later this winter I will also make the panniers...

TDM rack already cut to pieces:
http://www.shrani.si/f/3E/e5/1f0l24t9/img3400.jpg

Some cutting, and fitting, and cutting and fitting...
http://www.shrani.si/f/1h/QW/15gog4EP/img3408.jpg
http://www.shrani.si/f/y/CN/21Z4uFqD/img3406.jpg

Left side rack was simple, try to maker it identical and mirrored on the other side.

Sandblasted it, painted it for like 5-6 times:
http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/xa/4BFw7kGf/dsc01052.jpg

Looks promising:
http://www.shrani.si/f/2N/td/lYWHl0r/dsc01083.jpg
http://www.shrani.si/f/2r/K4/4djtyKvU/dsc01078.jpg
http://www.shrani.si/f/3H/10O/4HRFoBD7/dsc01143.jpg

I also predicted a spot for tool tube, since i have one sided exhaust, i had place on the other. Just great to put two tool tubes, where I can keep a lot of tools.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2s/Mv/1yfDZjqC/dsc01127.jpg

This is it for now.
My bike was little transformed during this season.
I put some character in it on my own, to make it feel just i like it.
To make it useful as i can for my riding style.
I love this bike.
Got some ideas for next modifications, to make this winter shorter.
The very next is the bash plate i mentioned in the other thread.
Hope I will make it with your help.

I hope you like what I did to mi bike so far. I wrote it here also to help some other owner of the Tenere, when needing information about this bike. I know how difficult it is sometimes to find exactly the info you need.

maxwell123455 20-12-10 20:32

Does look like youve made the bike into what i would be looking at doing if a were to get one.

Im just too tall for the standard style/stock. (Although at the moment ive an R ive sat on the Z in the shops quiet alot and find not real big difference as ive a set of raiser links.)

tripletom 20-12-10 21:02

I like what you've done fella, remarkably similar to me! I think there are more people doing their own stuff with Tenere's rather than throwing money at the bike on TT products instead.
This makes me happy.

cr3sp0 20-12-10 21:37

Nice mods Ni3ous - what mount did you use for your Garmin? Looks similar to the Nuvi I've got. Cheers.

Nelis 20-12-10 21:40

Nice mods!

I can only dream about being that handy, so im buying the Touratech goodies.
:)

Pleiades 20-12-10 22:27

Nice mods - all practical too.

If your mate can knock up 50 of those exhausts in his lunch breaks at the Akrapovic factory and sneak them out in his pants, he'll make a fortune on here!

Touratech stuff isn't that bad (in fact their alloy fabrications are very good), you just need to be patient, fairly wealthy and be able to read instructions in German!

Gerhard Beukes 20-12-10 23:18

now that you have done all those mods, i think it is time to do some mods to that KTM suit of yours too....cannot ride your fully mod Ten with that orange suite on???...or can he???

Kamikuza 21-12-10 02:06

Nice

enduro374 21-12-10 10:58

Looks remarkably similar to my Ten'.

Next mod's for me are:
Renthal Bars
Suspension
Tyres
Hi Front Guard
Remove weight (?)
Bash guard/water pump guard

Very intersted to know how much of an improvement the Hyperpro suspension is?

Have you fitted Kev's fuel mod and removed the AIS?

I used this to mount the Nuvi:
http://www.amazon.com/GARMIN-010-110.../dp/B000VRHMSK
I just made a steel riser in the back, to make it fit where it is, and have a good angle for view.

He, he, I understand you, but I like it, so KTM riders can see I had KTM.
Then I can explain them, that I sold that Austrian machinery, and bought a proper enduro bike.

:laughing4:

I removed AIS. Kev mod is still waiting in the garage to be fitted.

About Hyperpro you will find here my experience with it:

Quite honestly I'm in two minds whether to put my beloved Ten' through the kind of off road it's really not designed for or to get me a WR/EXC in addition to take the hits..

I can see alot of money being spent just to make the Ten' OK for competition, but I can see the Ten' self destructing with the abuse...

Very good point in my mind. I run a WR250R besides the Tenere for that reason (the little WR is an extraordinary allround endurobike with great offroad capabilities).
However, I realize it is very challenging riding the Tenere offroad. And if you do, you should prepare for that and get some training on it, I guess, since handling this 200kg beast at trail riding or whatever may become a demanding task.
As far as I am concerned, I got me the Tenere as a touring and travelling bike, but I won't refuse riding offroad sections if appropriate or inevitable. However, if there is a choice, I will for sure take the WR, no question.

enduro374 22-12-10 15:06

I think you're right flatboarder.

I really would like to enter the Big Bike Rally Challenge in 2011, but don't want to kill my Ten' in the process. Like you, I have my Ten' for travelling and want it there too, when the mood takes me.

I've ridden the WR 250 and it's a great bike, but I prefer the extra grunt with the 450. Used to race a KLX 250 back in '94 when they were the new thing - underpowered and a real bas!ard to start, but a sweet handling and light bike..

Ni3ous 02-01-11 17:17

If someone finds that luggage plate useful, that have made it cut out of steel plate 2-3 mm thick...
http://www.shrani.si/f/2h/yY/3lDG8wOB/zadajsplosco.jpg

...than here is the plan to make it on your own. Hope this will be useful for somebody.

Mike Wright 02-01-11 20:46

Thank you. It looks like I can still use my topbox as well

Ni3ous 13-02-11 08:36

Bash plate

Hello, I have the bash plate manufactured.
Like I said in other thread...
Since I wasnt able to get one like I wanted, I decided to build it on my own.
First I did it with cardboard, than with 1 mm steel plate. Bend it, tape it to final form.
My friend later put it in AUTOCAD and gave it a plasma cut and some alu welding.
Its done, and I only have to bolt it on the bike.
If interest, we could make some more for any of you guys.

http://www.shrani.si/f/31/nY/4JrYUGxg/platepaint.png

richardsracingmad 13-02-11 08:43

that looks very good!!! Are you going to make it out of semi-hardened ali? 5mm?

Mike Wright 13-02-11 08:49

Nice work..couple of questions.

Does it bolt to the existing location at the front and how will you attach the rear points?

Ni3ous 13-02-11 08:57

Its semi hardened, so will not bend too easy.
Will bend in hard hits, when it is supose to bend, to prevent bracket/engine damage.
Its made with 3 mm plate. Its a good compromise with weight/performance ratio.
It protects water pump wery good, and the side engine covers partially (bottom part, usually damaged from flying rocks) , it is all the way to the back of the engine, so the whole bottom is protected all the way to the rear spring bone.
In front it is not bolted on existing brackets, but I also made new brackets, to make it fit the best.
Rear point is maunted on existing spot with one additional bracket.
I wil probably find time to mount it next weekend. Will make some more photos to make it all clear.

Mike Wright 13-02-11 09:18

Does sound good Im looking forward to see it on the bike with more pics

scrappy462 14-02-11 01:16

It's looking good, I would be interested in getting one. What would you be selling them at??

Ni3ous 14-02-11 07:56

Not sure yet.
Have to fit it first, and evaluate the final fittment and build quality.
Will let you know, but I am sure it will be very good price/performance.

Yes it looks very good I be waiting for the end result on a price for it ... cool .:eusa_clap:

Final mods of this winter

Winter is coming to an end, so final fabrications are coming out of the garage!
:smilies0349:

Finished mountings on my Alpos cases, for my custom made racks:
http://www.shrani.si/f/K/fg/30Xp63kj/img3630.jpg

Fitted Barkbusters handguards and Touratech folding mirrors:
http://www.shrani.si/f/I/11z/4jZ0voAY/img3633.jpg

Finished with fabrication and fitted home custom made bash plate out of 4 mm aluminium, polished and lacked. (lost some fine shine with lack...hmmm)
http://www.shrani.si/f/2r/w2/3LgyHzf4/img3618.jpg

One more with alu side cases also.
http://www.shrani.si/f/2p/13K/rgDpCcr/img3605.jpg

I like what I did to my bike this winter. Now its time to ride it!

Ni3ous 17-10-11 20:39

Okay, the pictures up there are from the beginning of the season, this is what I ended up in the end...you can imagine the rest of the bike...

I clean my bike very often, but also ride it very often in hard wet, muddy conditions.
This is the look of the rear hub I need to clean to look like new.
Any suggestions?
http://www.shrani.si/f/3p/ho/2RcI7DQz/rear-hub.png

Owners know this is aluminum hub, so its difficult to clean.
And on the picture this is already washed with high pressure steam washer, so it should be clean already, and it only gets to this point.
I know I can do something with brush and diesel, or WD40, but will not be able to remove all, to make it shine.
Thats why I am asking for ideas.
Hope I find some good ones here.

Thanks for help.

Fuchs 17-10-11 20:52

i know that problem and my way is just not to care how it looks :D
but i would care about that nut you are missing at the sprocket

Grim Reaper 17-10-11 22:10

Use a paint brush or a toothbrush and some paraffin. You can also do this with your chain. Just don't go near the bearings or it'll take all the grease out.

Leave it for 10 mins or so then the dirt just wipes off.

Don't forget to give it a good rinse though before lubing it up again.

Ni3ous 18-10-11 16:09

Oh, that nut is misssing, because I put it off, to have it as a sample, because I will buy new ones. Since, when my chain felt off the sprocket and damaged the nuts. and hub.
Winter project is to fix it as possible.

I will try with parafin.

Ni3ous 24-11-11 17:53

..

Ni3ous 24-11-11 18:27

As you were able to find out, I ride my Tenere quite hard during season, but in the end, I want to take care of my bike very good, so I will be able to ride her for many more seasons.

I started to dissaseble whole bike, and i ran on all kind of wear...
Damaged and dirty rear hub...
http://shrani.si/f/1Y/11g/4efxpsYp/photo1440.jpg

Bent and scratched rims
http://shrani.si/f/H/W6/In4ZUWd/photo1450.jpg

I decided to re-paint rims, so I had to remove spokes, and I also found bent spokes
http://shrani.si/f/1t/pt/2RMlRW4S/photo1500.jpg

So I decided to make a therall clean and check on the bike. In the end there was only engine and wiring on the frame...
http://shrani.si/f/24/BR/2X71ZPUv/photo1534.jpg

After dissasembling, I high pressure washed all parts for three times, cleaned it and removed all dirt from all hidden areas, that I cannot access when bike is assembled together.

Bash plate which I made last winter, took some hard hits this season, and it worked pretty well. I decided that deserves a new paint together with the rims...
http://shrani.si/f/3L/CT/4gF9cE4X/photo1536.jpg

I repaired spokes and gave them some new shiny crome.
http://shrani.si/f/3y/RY/31YJDYlr/slika-003.jpg

New color sheme of the bike is seen on the horizon :)
http://shrani.si/f/3W/z9/3Ut3uCI8/photo1680-1.jpg

Sooon I started to assemle together hub, rim and spokes...

http://shrani.si/f/2H/9y/2MjduT7r/img5598.jpg

Dissasebling rear swingarm, to change all the parts in variable swing part
http://shrani.si/f/2K/8J/3gPiTaMs/img5603.jpg

Swingarm took alot of rocky hits this season, so deserved to give her a fresh look also
http://shrani.si/f/39/25/4vKFYBl3/img5605.jpg

So I fixed the scratches and painted her.
http://shrani.si/f/2F/XS/1SNLnHja/img5608.jpg

Also put new all bearings, seals (semerings) and rods in the rear variable linkage
http://shrani.si/f/3a/YB/qz16lDI/img5595.jpg

Dissasebled front end, changes wheel bearings and seals.
http://shrani.si/f/D/13B/3SW75V6P/dsc01509.jpg

Steering head bearings are fine, so I just re greased them
http://shrani.si/f/3c/w9/3tO8tkMb/dsc01507.jpg

Ni3ous 24-11-11 18:28

part two

Also changed woren off fork oil ( I think the suspension on this bike did in two years, what supposed to do in a lifetime )
http://shrani.si/f/2N/Ul/24y0XNZU/dsc01492.jpg
http://shrani.si/f/P/xw/3q7e0yTW/dsc01484.jpg
http://shrani.si/f/3m/s6/4BhVNGBz/dsc01505.jpg

Also put new chain, sprockets, bearings, seals in rear hub.
http://shrani.si/f/36/cR/2Rt5dsaw/dsc01510.jpg

When whole bike is dissasebled, that is a good chance to inspect all parts, clean each one individually, grease it if nessesary and that put it back on bike. That is also a great way to ket to know your bike better and become keen to fix some things on your own if nessesary.

Than it was time to start putting bike back together...
I also made a snake wire, will see how it works in the next season.
http://shrani.si/f/w/Fg/2eDzi2U3/dsc01532.jpg

Somewhere in the middle
http://shrani.si/f/y/qT/V5NHAAq/dsc01427.jpg

Bottom view
http://shrani.si/f/2f/RS/3PfheJRV/dsc01535.jpg

Almost finished
http://shrani.si/f/1r/8K/1QIbRg7/dsc01525.jpg

But the winter just started, and I still have to do tailtidy, put on customized single sided Akrapovič, make some adjustments on footpegs, try to relocate toolbox on a spot that gives weight of tools closer to the center and lower on bike, for better handling on terrain...

manneman 24-11-11 18:53

Impressive job, Thumbs up!

Pleiades 24-11-11 19:05

You've been working hard. Looking smart. White wheels, now there's an idea - make the bike 20Kg lighter!?
