Removal of bar end weights ?

Hi, I have just got a tenere with the KTM handguards but they are held on by the original bar end weights. I wish to remove these but cant find a suitable 'bung' type bolt to go in their place. I believe the size I need (correct me if im wrong) is M16 x 1.5 (pitch) x 20mm (length). Does anybody know of anything I can use and where to get them ? I would prefer something that undoes with an allen key and looks reasonably flush with the bar end. Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy.

I just put in M16 bolts with a hex head, not very pretty, but not to bad either, I think finding something with an allan key head will be difficult. Have you ridden without the bar ends? I put mine back on, too much vibrations, but I hear some people can't tell the difference.

Not on the Z, but I have fix handguards using expansion bolts, replace the mid screw with a nice inox allen bolt and ron't overtight it.

have fun,

j.

You should be able to buy a multi pack of allen bolts of different sizes from some where like Halfords, B and Q or the like. I know in halfords they where doing it in Norn Iron as i got a box of washers and they had the allen key bolts beside me.:tazdevil:

Thanks for the reply, I will be checking Halfords in the next few days but I suspect like B & Q they dont stock sizes as large as M16 and if they do they tend not to be the right 1.5 fine thread.

Ebay.

You can buy every bolt size you want on Ebay. Just search by M6, M8 etc

I have TT handguards on mine, and it now handles like a bag of spanners, vibration hell over 50mph :cens1::cens1::cens1:

Looks nice but the bar end is made of alloy and light as a feather compared to the originals

Going back to the original Yamaha guards until i can find something thats more suitable

I understand the Barkbusters are quite meaty???

Anyone else suggest something thats not going to affect handling/vibration

Thanks in advance

This sounds really strange to me. I replaced stock handle bar with oversize aluminium bar, removed bar end weights and replaced upper triple clamp and handlebar clamp by some new version without any rubber seatings in it. I do not find any vibrations unusual to single cyclinders and even my GPS mounted on the handlebar takes it without any problems. Just rode 2600km withing 6 days.

You may want to consider foam grips, that work perfectly for me. Note you need to use special glue to make them stick in their position.

mutmatt,
I found exactly the same problem as you have. After 20 minutes at around 90kph my hands were numb! However I found the cure with a bit of plastic modification, and some washers from the hardware store and I could keep the TT hand guards, and be rid of the vibes.

In the above thread, I have a few pics brief explanation of what I did to make the original bar end weights (at around 400 grams each!) fit with the TT guards. It seems that Yamaha did put them on for a reason after all :).
