Removal of bar end weights ?
Hi, I have just got a tenere with the KTM handguards but they are held on by the original bar end weights. I wish to remove these but cant find a suitable 'bung' type bolt to go in their place. I believe the size I need (correct me if im wrong) is M16 x 1.5 (pitch) x 20mm (length). Does anybody know of anything I can use and where to get them ? I would prefer something that undoes with an allen key and looks reasonably flush with the bar end. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Andy. |
I just put in M16 bolts with a hex head, not very pretty, but not to bad either, I think finding something with an allan key head will be difficult. Have you ridden without the bar ends? I put mine back on, too much vibrations, but I hear some people can't tell the difference.

Not on the Z, but I have fix handguards using expansion bolts, replace the mid screw with a nice inox allen bolt and ron't overtight it.
have fun, j. |
You should be able to buy a multi pack of allen bolts of different sizes from some where like Halfords, B and Q or the like. I know in halfords they where doing it in Norn Iron as i got a box of washers and they had the allen key bolts beside me.:tazdevil:

You can buy every bolt size you want on Ebay. Just search by M6, M8 etc

I have TT handguards on mine, and it now handles like a bag of spanners, vibration hell over 50mph :cens1::cens1::cens1:
Looks nice but the bar end is made of alloy and light as a feather compared to the originals Going back to the original Yamaha guards until i can find something thats more suitable I understand the Barkbusters are quite meaty??? Anyone else suggest something thats not going to affect handling/vibration Thanks in advance |

just a thought but try hope bar end plugs they are made for mountain bikes but may fit they look great come in lots of colours and have hex heads
about 15 quid i think try wiggle or CRC |
mutmatt,
I found exactly the same problem as you have. After 20 minutes at around 90kph my hands were numb! However I found the cure with a bit of plastic modification, and some washers from the hardware store and I could keep the TT hand guards, and be rid of the vibes. http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?p=96982#post96982 In the above thread, I have a few pics brief explanation of what I did to make the original bar end weights (at around 400 grams each!) fit with the TT guards. It seems that Yamaha did put them on for a reason after all :).

all sorted now :eusa_dance: |
Handguard Vibrations
My solution was to buy the Tenere specific Barkbuster versions 85.00 delivered from dirtbikebitz, drill & re-tap the existing bar end weights (thanks to Greg from this site for the ideas) and re-fit the Handguards, absolutely perfect, no vibrations maybe even less than normal due to the Handguards being tightened up in place and more importantly the Handguards dont touch any part of the screen when on full lock in either direction. I got a local engineering firm to drill & re-tap them for around 7.00.
Although you only gain around an inch in width overall it does seem a little bit more when in confined areas but it does the job without any nasty vibrations and fits perfectly. Peregrine... |

Bar end weights
Hi TDMalcolm, I got the engineering firm to drill into the weight part which is around 40mm long, they drilled & tapped around 30mm deep and provided me with longer bolts which are exact replicas of the B/buster versions, the Handguards have a thickness of 10mm so i have an overall depth of 40mm to utilise, i currently have 30mm bolts in giving me a bite of 20mm but obviously you can adjust this to suit particularly if your doing extensive off-roading.
Hope this helps. Steve |

Handguard
Hi TDMalcolm, The bike is terrible when you take the OEM weights off as i did at first when putting on the small weights supplied with the Barkbusters i vowed to take Handguards off and find an alternative as the fillings in my teeth were coming loose and it was no fun whatsoever but thanks to Greg on this forum he gave me the idea for the job and you will love the result as well as the look.
All the best Steve |
I guess this thread is another perfect example of how we are all different. I changed from the OE bars to Renthal highs and fitted some venom handguards (cheaper to buy both than buy TT or Barkbuster guards on their own...), ditching the bar end weights. I did that with probably 800 miles on the bike. I'm now approaching 15,000miles and have never had any problems with vibes.

I'll be doing about 3000 miles in the next month, so if I don't post in August, it's probably because my fingers have fallen off! Or because, since I'll be doing most of those miles in an MX lid and goggles, I've gone deaf/insane. |
Guess we'll know more by sunday ;)

Hi,
Stupid question, but don't want to damage things through lack of preparation. How are the original bar end weights removed? Looks like a hex key in the end, but over paint in the socket means it's not clear and I can envisage me stripping the paint to find it's not a hex key at all. Thanks, Penfold |
In case someone asks in future, it is a hex key.
