Cheap Cush Drive Mod

Its bound to happen sooner or later, the inevitable came when I had a tyre puncture,I came to know of the cush drive which is not up to mark.

Searched this forum and found out of Kev's mod which is to put used rubber tubes in between to eliminate the clearance.

Juz for the benefit of the rest,I've taken some photos to share with.

Anyway, shame on you yamaha, using below par cush drives. :fing06:

Ok,this is my cush drive after 5555km..(sorry,couldnt resist it,juz a nice number to do the mod) :081:

Here is my slightly knackered cush drive.. 80% of normal commuting & 20% of commuting..(and its already like this?? )

After taking out the rubber

After some light cleaning, this was the amount of rubber that has disintegrated

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...SNC00245-1.jpg

After placing back the cush drive,I cut out some rubber sheets from a punctured used tube to remove the clearance..

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...SNC00252-1.jpg

And after which, push the sprocket carrier into it..
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...SNC00255-1.jpg

Ahh..no more clearance..

back in place..

After effects of the mod.

What can I say,it was a great mod to do yet cheap.. Thanks Kev..:thumbsup[1]:

No more snatching observed. Smooth feel when riding. Brilliant.

And now to test it offroad in the future..:HappyRoll_ANPIUI:

Next mod..the ^*&^#! oil breather..:104:
For a brilliant bike..it sure does have plenty of issues..damn u yammy..:098:

Thanks so much for your time and photos!!!

Same here!

When I had a new back tyre a couple months ago did the same thing, absolutley so much better.:blob6:

stumpydave 06-12-09 21:25

Nice write up zewl with clear useful pics, I'l be doing the same with my cush drive shortly. thanks

Kev 06-12-09 22:25

Well executed, exactly to my instructions.

Depending on how worn your rubbers are, you might need a bit of force to insert the sprocket hub.

zewl 07-12-09 04:38

thanks all.. :happy3:
i juz felt there was a need to address this issue for all the tenere owners..coz its a brilliant bike to be having a lame cush drive..
i even did it for a friend of mine..
me cant stand imperfection sometimes...bigwink

kev,juz need ur advice,im curious..Would there happen to be any aftermarket cush drives? i've googled plenty of times on the web but to no avail..anyone?

After I did the inner tube trick back in 05, I stopped looking for cush drive rubbers.

What a superb explanation with excellent use of pics for illustration.

Thx for the pics !!!

Nelis 08-12-09 16:57

Is it still an issue on the 09 Tnr??

I dont have any spare tubes, i do have ones from a bicycle.
They probably arent good enough to use?

they may be too small/thin, but maybe by doubling them up ?

drb277 08-12-09 18:09

You can get an old inner tube from any tyre fitter, they would probably be glad to get rid of one.:D

They should be fine, it is what I used........although I packed mine out differently to zewl.

I also used some plastics strips cut from an ice cream tub to fill some of the space.

cotthem 08-12-09 21:46

Thx

Super with the pic's

stuxtttr 14-02-10 16:03

I used bicycle inner tube ( an old pink air B)

I just doubled it over to increase the thickness it still works fine.

Have to say it was a bit harder getting the rear back in as I had to really squeeze the hub and cush drive together so they would clear the swingarm.

The photo's and descriptions worked a treat thanx

Avo 14-02-10 19:11

Sprinkle a little talcum powder on the rubber before reassembly and it will all push back together a lot more easily :icon_thumleft:

scoobie_007 02-04-10 14:56

Thnks for all the above info guys, easy to follow - did mine today, only problem I had was pushing the sprocket back into place to clear the swingarm. Several strategically placed cable ties to hold the sprocket tightly in place against the newly installed tyre rubber did the trick....& remembered to cut them away after all was done !

Gary117 02-04-10 20:25

Great pictures and info. :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

weeksy 29-04-10 12:33

Thanks for the pics.

One of the easiest fixes i've had to do on a bike... although showed me a TONNE more dirt that i had to clean.

Avo 29-04-10 19:31

How are peeps finding the longivity of this mod?

I fitted new tyres (siracs again) at the week end, and my high kwalitee pond liner was shot.

I re-did a mod, but using 1mm aluminium sheet to make shims to insert between the original rubbers and the webs. Nice and tight, slipped in easily, and seems to be working a treat!

stuxtttr 05-05-10 19:57

good idea I struggled to get mine back in as well.

Must check the mod now as its been done a while

I've got a 2009 Tenere and it has done 6000kms and I've got sloppy rubbers !!! and metal to metal contact on the central area around the hub bearing casting. Yam in NZ are scratching their heads. I'll be trying the mod as soon as I get my wheel back. Thanks for the informative instructions. Good on XT660.com.

PS - a little rubber specific grease (if you have any) will help the rubbers go back together as an alternative to talc

cheers

Cush Drive packing out with inner tube rubber

Just thought I'd update the progress of the Tenere inner tube mod for the cush drive rubbers.......

After 1000+ miles of riding with the inner tube bits packing out the cush drive, they melted and leaked out of the sprocket hub and all over the tyre etc. Could have been something to do with the 110deg heat in Death Valley or could be not.

Don't reckon the inner tubes area a long term fix - just keep badgering Mr Yamaha for new rubbers and maybe they will upgrade the material spec when enough people complain.

have fun

Kev 08-07-10 05:32

Yours would be the only one that I know of that has failed so quickly.

I would recommend you to use motorcycle tubing not bicycle tubing, just make sure it is packed in tightly.

My 04 XTX did 20K kms on the same inner tube rubbers.

tripletom 08-07-10 10:06

My bike is on it's third set of rubbers...

stuxtttr 08-07-10 10:56

just checked mine still working a treat after a few thousand miles

Is that the third set of Yamaha rubbers or the third set of modified rubbers?

If you do this mod at around 6000kms you should not need to replace the yamaha rubbers for at least 30000kms.

tripletom 08-07-10 12:52

Third set of Yamaha rubbers.
First set were replaced at 6,000miles I think, maybe earlier. Second set had the mod carried out and were sloppy by the 12k service. Third set fitted then. 15k on the clock now and there's a bit of play beginning...

Nelis 08-07-10 22:37

I have 2 years of warranty, so ill let the dealer renew them every time it comes back.
This way yamaha might see that its replaced every 8000km's

mudmatt 08-07-10 22:51

going to do mine this weekend hopefully:048:

Mech 09-07-10 07:20

Kev 09-07-10 12:55

Not that I know of.

cush drive mod

Im just about to fit a new set cush rubbers to my 05 sounds like i could save myself some cash in the future by adding this mod now as well ? ? :045:

Kev 11-10-10 02:05

Welcome mate.
The mod does work well.:031:

Nelis 24-10-10 18:22

Never wanted to do this mod, but...
Yesterday i collected my bike from the dealer, as i needed new ones.
The dealer told me they are no longer replaced under warranty.
He wanted me to pay 60,- but i refused.
The first time they where replaced under warranty, i asked whether there wasnt a better alternative.
He said i shouldnt worry as i had a 2 year warranty.

Yamaha is no longer going to pay for the rubbers, they now see it as a wear part. (just like chains/sprockets)

My dealer didnt want to argue about it, so i got off without paying.

I will soon try to collect some 2nd hand inner tubes, to do this mod
