oil in breather pipe
Hi guys,
both my dad and i have 660 Teneres. mine is a 2013 model and my dad has a 2008 one. The 2008 bike seems to be pushing out a considerable amount of oil through the clear breather pipe that comes off the bottom of the air box. I'm sure the engine crank case breather feeds into the air box? This tells me that there is an increase in crank case pressure and is therefore pushing the oil through and down this pipe. on my 2013 model tenere i have no oil whatsoever coming out of this pipe. What do you think? Thanks in advance |

This was/is a common problem with 2008 models. The crankcase breather chamber (which sits on the crankcase under the throttle body) didn't have enough baffling in it, so more oil mist than ideal passed through to the airbox and on to the drain tube. This is only a real problem on extended high speed runs.
The part was updated for 2009> and was available as a free "retro fit" at dealers for bike's under warranty, although wasn't an official recall - the customer had to request it. The only part available now is the updated one (11D-E5371-12) and it costs about 15. Fitting it will cure the problem completely. I have had an '08 XTZ since new and have the same issue on long runs. I have never bothered to change the breather, partly because it had ran out of warranty when I found out about the issue, but mainly because it's a ball-ache to change the part even though it only cost peanuts, and I don't mind emptying the drain tube (which I have extended in length). |

Mine is 2008 too;same position as Pleiades..;can't be bothered to change it yet.
When I drain to tube I just put the excess in my chain oiler. I rode the Smugglers Trail in Andorra last weekend and at the end I had no oil in the tube upon checking....after an autoroute run from Toulouse to home I had about 1cm of oil in the tube. Based on my experience I wouldn't worry too much about it. Ref the tube, what I would say though is to cut the tube short up to the wire holding support because if you off road regularly there's a change the rubber bung could be pulled off thus allowing dirty air into the engine. ![]() : |

Is there anyway how i can spot the difference between both versions of breather?
I have got one from a 2009 model (according to the seller), bought from a scrap yard that parted out a Tenere. But on the part itself it says manufacturig date 12-07 and partnumber 11D-E5371-00. If i look at the fiche i cant make it out either, the part numbers don't match up: https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/...px#productlist it says 11DE53711000 replaced 11DE53711200. But mine doesn't match either, although it's close to the first one |

The early type is a smooth-sided container, the later type has indents in the moulding so has a greater internal surface area. The later one looks like this:
