19.5L gillimoto tank
Just done a filling test on my 22.5L Gillimoto tank...
I empted it then filled it 1 liter at a time... The tank took 3L of fuel before the pump had fuel around it.. So the 22.5 tank only holds around 19.5L of useable fuel.. pitty... but it still gives a fuel range of 440km @ 23km per L..

My best has been 460km and it took just over 20ltr to fill up again but she was still running (and that was sitting on 110kph with panniers on).
I think riding on the road or off is a little different to a static test because the fuel is moving around and can get to the rear of the tank. But yes you are correct that you cannot use all the fuel in the tank. |

Better do some wheelie practice

Is this all worth it for 4.5l of fuel?
My question would be, is all this worth it for 15L vs 19.5L of fuel for a theoretical extra 100km of range?
I can consistently get 300km out of my standard tank on an "adventure ride". With a little Rotopax on the back, I've got the same range as if I'd ruined the look of my bike by fitting a Gillimoto. And I can take the rack & Rotopax off put it on another bike.. |

NO the extra fuel range is not worth the prise of a Gillimoto tank...
But a rotopax dosn't stop you denting the steel Yamaha tank... I done that the 2nd week I had the XT doing a river crossing.... I'm lucky the rock smashed the plastic wing & put the dent under where the wing goes... so can't be seen with a new wing... The Gillimoto tank also protects the radiator better I was getting over 300km out of the Yamaha tank... River's like this... big rocks everywhere... Vid of the type of ground we ride.. => http://youtu.be/QwpJDWY6jFM By petenz at 2012-05-17

Dusty Butt?
More like Rocky Butt Pete. Thanks for posting that video..
I don't think I'd enjoy riding my XT on those rocky trails. Looks like KTM Freeride country to me... So your decision on the Gillimoto was for a more crash-worthy moto? That would make sense if you are riding on those trails with what we would call boulders. Good luck with DustyButt 2012. |

And I can take the rack & Rotopax off put it on another bike. It's an extra 150km range and that is needed in many parts of Aus (if you get out and about that is) instead of having to look for and worry about fuel. You will not get the same range with one 1 gallon rotopax. I have done the two 1 gallon rotopax thing which gave me the same range but took up my luggage space. Ok so it's a 100+km between most towns in Aus so you are looking at stoping every 2hrs or every second town with the standard tank. Yes you can refuel on the side of the road with the Rotopax and I have done that too but it can be a pain depending where you are. There are many places where even 400km fuel range is not enough and you know I know where they are. I can still use my Rotopax when I need more range, check the distance from Innamincka to Lyndhurst and you will see what I mean. So ok if you just want to do short rides than you can stay with the standard tank. Petenz has pointed out other benefits of the tank as well. So is the Gilimoto tank worth it; bloody oath it is, I could not do without it and I quite like the look of it. Last edited by supamanaint; 04-09-12 at 12:36. |

Here is a good view of the tank that shows how low the fuel pick up is and where the the fuel is carried.
Sure you lose a bit in the wing area as with most tanks like this but it is not that much. I have put 20.5 ltr of fuel in before and the bike was still running, also there was still fuel around the fuel pump (yes I checked) so i'm guessing maybe closer to 21ltr useable. Sometimes you may get different tolerances during manufacturing to account for more or less capacity. Pete maybe that cold weather over there has shrunk your tank haha. |
