This is a first, or at least the first time anyone has told of this problem.

The adjuster is a single part (# 11D-F3111-00 ), is it possible you have adjusted it out too far ? Given the vibrations from the 660cc lump under the seat, if there was a problem you would think it would have fallen in already - unless it has ?? or the previous owner was responsible ??

To adjust the pre-load on the Tenere, you should first tighten both adjusters all the way in (maximum pre-load), then adjust out to set the preferable setting to a maximum of 27 complete turns.
