Stuck at the side of the road. advice please
Hi guys im currently stuck at the side of the road. checked oil and coolant b4 i sent out. engine light has come on and is flashing 1,1,1,1,6. managed to limp my bike to a garrage. now when i try to start the engine i get buzz. any advice would be good. cheers

Code 46 (four long, six short flashes) is a power supply issue causing the fuel pump not to run. Are there any other symptoms other than the buzzing? Sounds like you might just have the dreaded regulator/rectifier fault...

Thanks for that mate. managed to avoid the locals and make it out alive in the end. Was a dead battery in the end. Cheers again

Have you worked out why the battery lost its charge, or do you mean it was shagged anyway?!

Battery was almost 3 years old so due to be replaced. Replaced it and the regulator/rectifier. Still not keeping charge (volt meter was showing 12 - 12.5 when reving it. Should be around 14 shouldnt it?).
Left me at the side of the m5 last night. Lights started to die as I was riding home from work so pulled over and watched everything else die whilst I waited for the recovery lorry. Any bright ideas on what it could be? The recovery guy suggested the alternater? not sure where/ how to check it? Cheers again for any advice. |

Hi, Posted this in a similar thread too.
Output should be between 14.1 and 14.9 volts at 5000rpm, measured across the battery terminals. Personally I would double check the regulator installation and very closely inspect the connections at the connector block, also make sure the connector is pushed fully home. If you are sure the new regulator has been properly installed and the contacts in the plug to it aren't damaged it may be worth checking that the connector from the alternator stator windings is sound, it's located behind the rear master cylinder on the Z, enclosed by a rubber boot - it's the 3pin connector with white wires. You could also measure the resistance of the windings (you need an ohm meter), the readings between any pair of windings on the alternator side of the connector should be between 0.224 and 0.336 ohms. Check also the resistance readings between each winding and the chassis/earth, they should be infinite, i.e. no reading. If there is a reading it could indicate a short in one of the stator windings. Stator windings very rarely give any problems though (in any vehicle), usually it is a wiring fault in a loom or water ingress at a connector that causes problems here. I hope you find the problem quickly. Cheers.

As above; it is the connector (particularly the plug on the loom side) that is usually at fault and not the regulator itself. As well as carefully checking the terminals there for damage it is probably worth whipping the tank off and checking the main wiring harness that runs along the top right hand frame rail. This is another well documented source of electrical gremlins on the XTZ as it wears through causing broken or intermittent connections and shorting, and all the wiring associated with the charging circuit runs through it.
