SatNav wiring question
Just got my new sat nav, a Garmin Zumo 550 and want to hardwire it in.
I'm gonna use the spare connector behind the instrument panel My question is: Do i have to keep the in line fuse on the power supply cable provided or can i cut it down to the length i require as the factory connector should be fused, shouldn't it? Wiring not my speciality to say the least.............. Thanks in advance

Hi matt
I'd keep the inline fuse , thats what i did with my garmin lead, i then cut the end off and will cramp a new mating connector to pick up the spare connector behing the instrument panel. I managed to find some connectors which are the correct mating connector. This then gives you switched power which i think is rated at a max 5 amp, I also fitted a din plug socket to the RH side of the lower panel , there is a hole provided for the connector all ready , then ran that directly to the battery with a inline fuse. Sorted , got switched power and 12 volt continuous, all nice and tidy. |

I've got my zumo 550 plugged to that connector for years now, without a problem. I didn't use an extra fuse as the connector is on the same circuit as the parking lights, and is fused. If you want to power the zumo while filling up at the gassstation, simply, turn the ignition to 'park'. I just cut off the connector,it's only there as a power supply for diagnostics,so it's not that important.

You took the words right out of my mouth! That's exactly the set up that I have except that when I have had the bike running and Zumo on and then switch the engine off I get a prompt on the Zumo asking me if I want to stay ON or OFF, on battery power, no fussing with going onto park lights. No extra in-line fuse.
