Hi! Has anybody changed the OEM rims with ones for tubeless tyres? Is this modification possible?

This guy tried making it from stock rims:

I believe I'm right in saying that the profile of the rim differs according to whether it's designed for tubed or tubeless tyres, so although I've heard of people trying to fit tubeless tyres by sealing the centre of the rim where the spokes come through, there's no guarantee of success.
The proper way to do this would be to fit a new rim designed to accept spokes through the edge rather than the centre of the rim. This is the way BMW do it with the R1200GS. I believe the reason BMW decided not to follow this through with the F800GS is because there are fewer tubeless options for the 21-in front wheel, so the F800GS is tubed, whereas the vaguely similar but 19-in front wheel F650GS twin uses tubeless on alloy wheels.

How about mousse tubes?
The Dakar guys use it, why cant we? Is it a heat problem?

Mousse deteriorates over time and doesn't handle distances well. The Dakar riders normally change the mousses each night.
I must have read an earlier version of Chris Scott's experiments with sealing the rims. The updated article shows that the front in particular didn't work. Tizi n' Ouli Ousir is somewhere I want to go, south of Tinerhir it's close to the site of a famous battle during the time of the French 'protectorate'.

interestingly enough at a recent enduro/ h&h i won a set of tubliss thingys just havnt got round to fitting them, though that would be just the frount as the rear i got was 18''.as there is a rim lock in the system a hole has to be added to the rim and i suppose weights to be added to counter act the lock
,was waiting till i need a new frount tyre till i fit them, advriders have a few good reports of their use.
it's another alternative to replacing for a tubeliss rim or sealing the spoke holes check them out on www.tubliss.co.uk/ |
