I believe I'm right in saying that the profile of the rim differs according to whether it's designed for tubed or tubeless tyres, so although I've heard of people trying to fit tubeless tyres by sealing the centre of the rim where the spokes come through, there's no guarantee of success.

The proper way to do this would be to fit a new rim designed to accept spokes through the edge rather than the centre of the rim. This is the way BMW do it with the R1200GS. I believe the reason BMW decided not to follow this through with the F800GS is because there are fewer tubeless options for the 21-in front wheel, so the F800GS is tubed, whereas the vaguely similar but 19-in front wheel F650GS twin uses tubeless on alloy wheels.
