That time again
Well the Battlewings are beginning to square off on the back noticeably so it's time to start looking for replacements.
I've read through the good posts on this forum about tyres and have a list of those I'm considering as my replacements. In no real order then- Conti TKC80 (deal at 130 pair, posted) Bridgestone TW41/42 (just over 130) Metzeler Enduro 3 (127) Metzeler Tourance (140) I ride primarily road; however I do like to go trotting across fields and the like given a chance, and this set of tyres will have to deal with the snow come Jan/feb. I've used the Siracs before so probably won't go back, and I've used the Tourances on my Caponord and wasn't hugely impressed. If anyone has experiences of the tyres listed, please let me know what you thought, and their lifespan. Cheers |

Except for the Bridgestones I 've had them all. Like you I ride 95% on tarmac with an occasional blast over unpaved tracks: that's what I like about the bike; get dirty whenever you feel for it.
Currently on TKC's and just ordered a new rear after 6000km's, but that's only becouse the front is still good. If I had to replace them both, I'd go for the Enduro's again. Compared to the TKC's the Metzeler Enduro offer more grip on tarmac and slightly less off-road. More important (to me), the Endurances are stable and neutral while cornering, unlike the TKC's. For what it's worth..
Tom,
I've only used the Tourances and the TCK's on the Tenere. The first set of Tourances were great, good fo rlong distance touring, stable, good feedback - but most of this was continental Europe with slightly worse surfaces than here in the UK. The second set of Tourances were rubbish (OE ones are always better), lasted half the time, squared off, crap feedback. If I didn't know any better I'd have said they were a different tyre. Then I moved to a set of TCK's. At first I didn't like the odd feel, cornering was a leap of faith, didn't trust them on wet corners at all and you get this funny little wobble from the front at low speeds. I reckon I'll get around 3000 miles our of the rear. Since the suspension upgrade, they feel solid and well planted, there are no chicken strips, wet or dry it doesn't matter and there is no wobble from the front at slow speed. The point I'm trying to make, albeit a long drawn out one, is that, as you know, your suspension and rubber work together, a change in one will make the other feel different to. You are going to have to re-evaluate things when you change your forks.....

Thanks for both your views. I am very tempted to try the TKC's just so I can get some experience. If I don't like them I'm sure they wouldn't be hard to sell on.
Darren, you're completely right about the suspension and I'm really wanting to get the forks done soon. My middleman is in the process of moving and so has a lot on at the moment, but still, I would like some springs! I also had a look yesterday at the Mitas E07/08 and was quite tempted by them. Probably more so the E07. Thoughts... |
