Fitted the rear Swedish army tyre/wheel to the bike this afternoon and went for a blast. First impressions are a bit slippy for the 1/2 mile and slightly strange feeling of riding on blocks and then once warmed up Ok. Did about 20 miles and by the time I got home the tyre was starting to settle down so with a few more miles will be OK. Did a couple of dry green lanes and no issue despite the front tyre still to be fitted when I do some serious offroading in a few weeks.

Dont forget to fit rim locks ,i recently used mine offroading in mid wales and due to the weight of the bike the tyres will be prone to moving on the rim .When i got back and changed my tyres back to the Tourances from the MT 21's i noticed the valve on the fron wheel had moved at an angle as i had'nt tightened the rim lock up tight enough ,i am sure it would have ripped out if there had been no rim lock in the tyre

Never do you valve locking nut up tight always back it of about half way back up the valve so if your tyre does spin slightly it wont rip the valve out

25lbs in the front and 28 in the back, the tyres won't move on the rim. The reason the tyres move on the rim is when you run at low pressure and they are not gripping the bead to the rim. With the weight of these bikes you don't need to drop the tyre pressure down like you would on a 105kg enduro bike you are just asking for a pinched tube or ripped out valve.

If you use soap (or WD40 etc) on the tyre bead when fitting, give this time to disappear. I've seen bikes ridden quickly straight after a tyre change and guess what - they spin on the rim. Definitely leave the valve nut off or fit a mousse (or tyre balls) if you're really serious

Also, my experience of security bolts is that they are OK for mainly off road, but on road the wheel is so out of balance that it makes the whole bike shake. Personally I agree with the pinch flat theory and would run a slightly higher pressure and no security bolt.. Bit of a compromise either way I guess..

I just phoned Gywn up at Trellborg and asked him for some advice, my army special has done 1500 miles and has 9-8mm tread depth in the middle (started with 13mm) I told him that I would be riding to France and doing about 800 miles off road plus the travel down to Portsmouth and return from Folkstone (120miles to Portsmouth 220 miles from Folkstone) so about another 1200 miles minimum including riding back to Calais from Lille. My question was will I need another tyre before I go or would this one last OK,
I am thinking that most companies would have said change the tyre to get more business, no not Gywn he asked what bike it was fitted to then said that it would be fine and I would not need to buy a new one has they get better has they wear.

Would I recommend them and his business.........................YOU BET I WOULD

My rear after 3200 hard miles, just ordered another one ready for the Beacons Rally. There is still 5mm of tread left which is fine for the road but not the mud or grass

Great tyres these. Just fitted the front yesterday and took her for a spin. again once you have run the tyre for a few miles it settles down.

Going to Lakes meeting tonight for the weekend so will be doing some lanes and will let all know how the Army specials perform.
