Blown a seal (Not an Eskimo)

Blown a fork seal. Rode up a log staircase for about half a mile and at the top there was oil on the leg. The book said I need a tool to hold the thinggy a long way down before the bolt can be undone or tightened up.

True or false?

Got a good workshop and mechanical ability. What hammer do I use, big or small?

All joking aside any advise is welcome.
