Planning a first intervention - really confused.
Due to lack of knowledge. When you lack a technical background, to have a complete and deep understanding of motorcycles, a lot of information you receive can seem contradictory.
I want to make a first step to improve what I understand as the weight/performance ratio of my yet unmodified XT660Z. Since the particular bike has a really heavy exhaust, I thought I would start by replacing it with a single. Then it was further explained to me, that along this such a modification, another one is necessary, that of the air filter and thus fuelling adjustement is going to be needed too. This is were things get out of hand for me. As far as I understand, the installation of a power commander, or what many technicians here call a "parallel brain", is needed so that it provides the proper width of adjustements. So if I understand correctly, the procedure would be like: Installing all 3 components and then mapping the motorcycle with the help of a dynamometer apparatus to achieve a good rpm/power ratio and avoid damage of the engine. Am I getting this correctly? Any propositions? Can you direct me to the proper threads to study? I also have another question: What's the role of ECU remapping in all this, especially in relation to the power commander? Is it a needed step too? Is it unnecessary when a power commander is involved or does it synergize with it? Can it really be done remotely as OTR claims? As for the exaust I visited a popular local manufacturer in my city. He explained to me, that going for a full exhaust system replacement is pointless in this bike, for the material, cross section and general design of the pipes are already proper and he can do nothing better. In other words, only the muffler and connection pipes are to be replaced. Well as you understand, my understanding is quite basic and lately I'm trying to educate myself by watching videos and reading articles and threads. Please make this clear to me! Thanks in advance!! |

For increased performance a less restrictive exhaust and air filter will let the engine flow more air this weakens the fuel air mixture so a kev mod or pcv will be needed to richen the mixture and will give you back an increased power output. (the more air an engine can flow the more power you get) The Tenere is built to carry a pillion and luggage and to take lots of punishment on rough terrain this is why the frame is so strong but makes the bike heavy in comparison to an enduro bike which carries just one rider. it is however the best DUAL PURPOSE motorcycle on the market today.

Saving weight is asked frequently. I myself have a lighter xt660z as well. But remember, is putting a lot of effort with relative little result.
Depending on what you're after, it's better to start out with a light bike and go from there. For the exhaust, with any engine if you change the intake of fuel or air, you need to change the injection or carb. With injection you'll need a new map or fool the standard equipment to make it squirt more or less fuel. A new map is always better, because that is like a custom suit. A custom suit makes more sense of you're shape is more out of the ordinary ![]() The further you're talking your mods the better a new mapping will be compared to a fooling of the standard equipment |

Hiya and welcome to XT660 com, the best site around. These guys are excellent.
In answer to your question you need to just take your time and read through this site, clicking on all of the relevant threads. Start slowly and dont worry, the XT660 is one of the most bulletproof bikes on the market so you cannot really do any damage. The basics are really to save weight (so an after market exhaust will help straight away) and let the engine breathe better, on the inlet side you should consider the excellent DNA filters plus a snorkel removal. Have fun and enjoy your bike.
