Mod question (bored buying side tank protectors) - .: XT660.com

Hi.

I have my tenere about a year and its very common that i fall down, so the side tank protectors are broken, in my country it cost $45.000 (about US 110) per unit so i think to put a metal plate IN/ON the plastic, this for protect the tank.

i remember a picture (i dont remember where i see it) a tenere rider put a kind of wheels on the protectors (wheels wtf?) similar to the axle crash pads (off the road) but more tiny.

If you beef up the tank protectors too much then they won’t do their job properly, which is after all to wear away, absorb and dissipate impact forces – the reason they work is that they are sacrificial. If you make them stronger, all that will likely happen is that the forces will be transferred to their mountings which are in the plastic of the tank with the possible end result that the tank will get damaged, holed or pierced at these points?

Why not keep an old scuffed up pair and just fit them when you’re going off road? Not personally a fan of them, but have you considered fitting crash bars?

Just one crash bars solve this problem (sw motech) but i see it and are not very strong and doesnt protect all i want (water pump for example).

Another solution that i see was a leather tank cover, it will absorb impacts (as you say) and protect the sides from low impact falls.

The "Leather" tank panniers from Bagster are a high durability plastic and not leather, they prevent deep scratches that is all. And not to the Front side impact area either. Bu they do look good!
