Why not keep an old scuffed up pair and just fit them when you�re going off road? Not personally a fan of them, but have you considered fitting crash bars?

Just one crash bars solve this problem (sw motech) but i see it and are not very strong and doesnt protect all i want (water pump for example).
Another solution that i see was a leather tank cover, it will absorb impacts (as you say) and protect the sides from low impact falls.
