Lowering Kits
Hi guys
I have just purchased an XT660 Z, great bike. It has a lowering kit fitted (looks like 25mm) which actually suits me better. However, I noticed that the front forks do not appear to have been lowered to match. Can anyone tell me if it is advisable to lower the forks to match and by how much Thanks |

Hi
Having just fitted a set of 25mm lowering links the accompanying instructions recommend lowering the forks by 15mm. How well does your bike sit on its side stand? The side stand on mine could do with shortening a tad as the bike sits quite up right. Apparently the top yoke bolt torque is 23Nm and the bottom bolt 21Nm. I had to find that out by asking on here. |

Do you need the bike lowered? The height could have been the only fly in the ointment in my purchase of this bike: I went and test rode one to see how unsurmountable (literally!) this problem was going to be. I'm 169.5cm (and yes that 0.5cm gap to 170cm has always plagued me.
As someone (on here?) once said: am I a man or a mouse? With that in mind I promptly hopped on the bike. I was extremely satisfied with how easy it was to get on the Tenere and how easy it was to ride once I got going. When stopped, I just slid my arse so that only one cheek was on the seat. I was reluctant to partake in any lowering for fear of compromising the handling. |

I found I could use the bike no problem for road use but using it offroad I found it was slightly tall especially when you needed to jam your foot down quickly in the event of the front sliding or on an off camber trail.
Now I can get both feet flat to the floor to save the bike in any likely over balance or loose front end. |

I lowered my Tenere 40mm using lust Racing
lowering kit. Got my local workshop to do the work. The bike already had bar risers so the forks moved up through the yolks without hitting the bars. Chopped the side stand and rewelded. I have a centre stand and, yes, it is harder to get on the stand but if you can't manage, just roll the front and back wheels on to a couple of bits of wood to raise it, leaving a gap n the middle for the stand. Works a treat. ( you can always leave the chocks in your top box for touring).
Results: different bike. I felt doddery and top heavy on the bike before it was lowered, now I'm totally confident. The handling is unaffected except the feeling of dropping it at low speeds and manoeuvring has gone. I'm 5'8" with a 31" inside leg. I would recommend a lowering kit to anyone. You can get either 25 mm or 40mm kits from Lust racing for less than 50 on the net and the total cost for me was less than 100. Altogether worthwhile. ![]() |
