Grease your nipples.....steering head.
Just a wee add on I have on the XTZ. Easy to do and a few pumps here and there keeps the dirt and water out.
You just need to find a suitable place where the nipple wont foul any cable movement.Drill and tap and you're good to go! ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

Additionally, for a bit more protection, you could also fabricate a little aluminium shield to protect the bottom bearing from direct road spray, as it is a little exposed on the Ten. I made this up last spring and it does seem to a pretty decent job of keeping the lower bearing area free from water and crud:

When you pump grease in does it come out anywhere? If not, how do you know the grease is getting to the bearing face and not just packing the stem tube?
I must admit I was surprised at the dry state of my 14,000 mile old head bearings when I serviced them recently - if adding a single nipple there works it would make servicing much easier but I can't see how the grease gets to the bearings effectively.

Hi Simon... The stem tube is indeed filled with grease until the new grease squeezes out,at both the bottom and top bearing older dirty grease. In my case more grease squeezes out at the bottom bearing.Just wipe off with a rag and you're good to go. ![]() . |
