I must admit I was surprised at the dry state of my 14,000 mile old head bearings when I serviced them recently - if adding a single nipple there works it would make servicing much easier but I can't see how the grease gets to the bearings effectively.

Hi Simon...
The stem tube is indeed filled with grease until the new grease squeezes out,at both the bottom and top bearing older dirty grease. In my case more grease squeezes out at the bottom bearing.Just wipe off with a rag and you're good to go.
