Rear tank in aluminium

Hi,

Since the OTR 26L tank is way too expensive for me I'm thinking if it is possible to make a tank for myself, with some help :-)

I know of an excellent alu-welder who makes panniers to help me get the job done.

But what about a fuel pumpe from the tank to the EFI ?
The stock tank is located above the EFI, so gravity does the job there, but what about a lower mounted rear tank ?

hi what about leaving the tank easily removable? i fabricated a simple tank which required taking one nut off and tipping the contents into the main tank. how often is fuel going to be in short supply?.

more info on http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=14756&page=2 plus the main tank has a efi fuel pump built in

My thought

It will be a bit of mucking around but I ultimately I want a 30L safari tank on my XT660R. Once it is out of warrenty I will take the fuel pump out of the tank and mount it in its own little chamber on top of the crank case. That way I can gravity feed to the pump and pump to the injectors. The tank they put out for the Suzuki DR650 almost fits but isn't wide enough to clear the radiator, so a radiator off another bike would probably work.

Shame that Safari Australia isn't stepping up to the challenge but they did say they would make a 30+ Litre tank if they had enough orders.

An XT660R with a 35L tank would be a Tenere killer...

Hey Wootonboy, do you think its worth getting a poll together to find out how many would be interested in a safari tank? May convince them to do it.

I agree, the R with a long range tank is a winner. I think a stack load would buy it.
