I think they are expecting you to cut and shunt the new electrics with the new ones. But as long as you get some good rubber type electric connections you should be able to cut the old connections off and put the new ones in. The 3 wires should be negative, a positive for the ordinary light for the rear and the other a positive for the brake part of the rear light.
