I wonder if the skid plate had any gravel or stones in it causing a rattle? It could have been the broken weld? I have an X so can't relate to dirt roads but I would have thought your late model bike with very few K's it will be something simple.
I get pretty bad chain slap if I'm in the wrong gear.
