Maybe not 'must', but you'd be well-advised to throw it away and ill-advised to re-use it!

The gold coating is supposed to prevent rust. However, if you ever get rust on your chain (any chain), you aren't using enough lube or maintaining it properly!
Some folk like the 'blingy' look of a gold chain, but really it doesn't make a whole heap of difference - It's how you look after it that counts. In any case, a chain that actually still looks gold after it's been on the bike a few miles is more than likely under-lubed. I have a gold DID on mine, but you can't actually tell it's gold at all - the Scottoiler sees to that!
