As I mentioned before, check for evidence of regular servicing, either dealer stamps of it DIY, receipts etc. Ask when the oil, coolant and brake fluid was last changed. If the question can't be answered satisfactorily, then be wary. Condition of the chain and sprockets I always find is a good indicator of how well a bike has been looked after in general, and big singles are harder than multis on the final drive. Disc and pad condition is also another quick and easy to see indicator of how cherished an XT has been by it's owner.

Look carefully for smooth steering action - get the front wheel of the ground and check the headrace bearings for notchiness. Same the with the swingarm - check for play in the linkage and evidence that it's been stripped and greased.

2007/8 bikes were the fist with O2/lambda sensors and tend to be a bit more prone to surging than others with the ECU 5VK-8591A-10 ECU. See here. Have a look to see whether any fuelling devices have been fitted as this will save you a few quid in the long run if you want to sort it.

Other than general cosmetic condition, spokes and engine finish particularly, just look out for the usual stuff you would on any used bike like engine rattles/knocks, wheel bearing play, brakes, clutch action etc.
