I've looked into the specs of my rear Talon/Excel wheel.
it's a 3.0x17 with 36 spokes.
I run 130/80 by the way

Interesting, when I enquired at Talon, OTR and my local wheel builder, they could only source a 2.50 or a 3.50 x17. Which is why I have stuck with the stock rims as much as I'd like a change. Useful info. I'll have a look again...

I'd guess the Tenere is a much much heavier bike and gets used more on the road, for longer distances and loaded up with luggage? This is what happens when you fit a tyre that's too wide for the rim and ride at motorway speeds for any length of time on a heavy bike:
The side walls being pulled in put strain on the edge of the tyre and it can overheat and peel away.

All I'm going on is the recommended sizes of tyres for given rims:

The recommended ideal rim for a 140/80 is a 3.50" (but a 2.75 or 3.00 are acceptable).
