DNA recommend you should clean your filter every 3,000 miles.
Of course, I don't listen to this since I'm doing that mileage every two months. Too much effort.
Yesterday, I decided to have a look at the filters.
My stage 3 side cover was clean but needed oiling. You're looking for the cotton to be a consistent red throughout.
Stage 1 filter needed a blow-out with compressed air (from a can, not a compressor) since it was had some debris inside. Gave it a quick but careful wipe. Held it up to the light, a perfect red colour.
Put it straight back in.
Do them when they need doing, and not at any other time.
