I check my oil when I fill it with fuel - usually it's been running for a couple of miles and stays pretty constant at just near the top of the hatched area. After long thrashes you might want to let it settle a bit as it can occasionally be a bit "frothy".

Just to compare I had an old SOHC Honda CB750 (awful, awful bike) and it would empty the whole tank into the sump overnight. Whereas my BSA C15 just emptied the tank onto the floor.
