I wouldn't be technically minded enough (yet anyway) to start drilling or chopping and changing wires in the loom to fix issues, but I wouldnt mind spending a few quid on something like a power commander if applicable.

The surging/hunting is more of an irritation than a massive lump of power like an on off switch... you're riding along and it gets a bit chuggy for example at 30mph... it doesn't drop to 10mph than to 50mph in a nano-second.
