Personally, I do my oil roughly every 3K miles, oil and filter every 6K. Always have changed at half the recommended distance/time with every bike I've had. When you consider the cost of the fuel we chuck in our bikes, a few extra quid on more regular oil changes pales into insignificance. Well worth it for the extra peace of mind.
