First align the adjuster so the cable slit lines as the picture and wind it out a few turns to reduce the angle further. Then lock the knurled locknut with a flat tip.
Then ....
Other end of the cable at the crank case you can adjust free play there with two 12mm oe spanners. Can't quick adjust but got it sorted in one ride, stop adjust, ride, stop adjust, etc.
