Haha I'm 6 foot and dropped off a TTR 250 to ride off on the Tenere! Still remember sitting the thinking wow, this is a big bike!
As far as gear change goes, i have found it does not like a tentative change. Mine like to be shifted firm and decisive.
Personally don't mind the ratios, with my limited experience it seems obvious and predictable.
