The biggest difference between Scottoil and chain lube is it is not sticky and is designed to get flung off the chain taking the grit and dirt with it, unlike traditional lubes which attract dirt like a magnet and allow a kind of grinding paste to build up on the chain and sprockets if not cleaned off regularly. Using chain lube means much more frequent sessions cleaning the chain to remove this sticky mess. Effectively Scottoiler makes your chain self-cleaning (although I still do once a year) and ensures it's doused in fresh lubricant all the time.
From my experience, I reckon a scottoiler doubles the life of a chain and sprockets, so it easily pays for itself.
