I can comment from the saddle of a Tenere:

Top speed - 100+ (just) & with the wind behind!
90 cruising - Can be done, just hold it open, but strong head winds can be entertaining.
Reliability - Brilliant. Protect your reg'/rect' though.
Self Servicing - Easy. If you know your way around a spanner.
Economy - As low as 40mpg if you cane it and as mich as 60mph if you plod.
The surging can be ironed out - depends on what year the bike is. Check out the fixes on this forum.

I guess it's a bit like the KTM but less harsh.

Go and get yourself a test ride. but do try the Tenere too!!
