I'd agree. The only things I've seen with gauze filters also have 1000 mile oil-change intervals. I'd be very wary of using one in a Tenere.

Remember that the Yam service schedule is only to do the filter every 12,000 miles (every other oil change). Now I tend to do mine every time I change the oil because it's only a few quid, but it's not essential.

I'd carry a spare, because they're pretty light and there's always the chance that you'll do something dumb like take your bike swimming (ask me how I know). But in terms of replenishing your spare, or routine servicing, I'd be pretty happy to assume I'd pass a Yamaha dealer at least every 12k miles.

Maybe adopt the "never pass a petrol station" approach? Every 6k if you can buy a filter then change it, so you've always got 12k "in the bank" for the odd occasion you can't.

Worst case, a filter is light enough to FedEx without costing ridiculous money.
