The springs go on real easy with a large flat blade screw driver.

Yeah, I found the same thing. I made a wire loop and hauled on the springs with a bar through it. Like you say, no problem.
I did find I had to check the nuts on the stand pivot bolts. They kept loosening for a while but seem to have settled now with the help of Locktite.
