I think it is more cracking the casing than the actual pump itself? but I tend to agree with GULGo - it is not especially vulnerable unless you are really unlucky...

I rode my Tenere all over the USA (Moab, Rubicon, Trans-Am Trail) with the stock [plastic!] bash-plate, and Heroes-Legend with the OTR plate...

I'd be much more concerned taking a BMW GS off road and nurfing a cylinder head!
